Research Issues

Hello all,
New to the forums here just found the site a few days ago. I have checked through the boards to see if anyone else has had an issue with the research and didn't find anything. Anyway, the problem that we are facing (more than one of us in the house plays) is on one character that is Malky has a research of 5 and strength is a 2. Now for one of the books that you find it says that you have to have a research of 5 and a strength of 2 to use/read it and all. The character meets stat requirements but it is not letting the character use the book. Any ideas what the problem is? Oh and yes we have done the 1.2 patch and still it doesn't work, would the unofficial patch fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There shouldn't be any books that require a strength of 2 to be able to use. Books are reliant on the skill they raise, and your Research ability (which is the total of your intelligence + scholarship scores). So, if the book you found will raise, for example, brawl to 4. You need to have a 3 in your brawl skill to gain the benefit. Without knowing what book it is, I can't tell you actual skill score you need to raise.

You might find this list useful. It contains a list of the location of all the books, and what skills they raise (and what level are required). My guess is, since you require a 5 in research, you've probably found the brawl manual in the Mafia section of Downtown. You need a 2 in brawl along with the 5 in research to gain benefit from it.

Thanks for the info. You were right it was not strength ... I misread it.
