patch 1.2 help!

Ok, i got to the society of leopold to find out i have to patch the game! I thought my god but no biggie. I completely reinstalled the game and then patched it with 1.2. Now when i use the disc menu or desktop shortcut the game comes up with "vampire masquerade..." as normal, however then the screen goes black and crashes Seriously any suggestions no matter how small or stupid please tell me.
