Game breaking bug and console problems

Post by coradin »

Hello,

I recently got this game and am currently playing w/ patch 1.2 (official) and 3.1(un). I get the sarcophagus (sp?) and bring it to the prince and the game resets to the stolen from the museum dialogue. My log shows the quest completed. I have tried numerous types of workarounds (not picking up the Giovanni Book, giving the fetish to Pisha prior to Italian Dinner, etc) to no avail.

I searched the forum and it appears that someone else had this problem but the solution suggested does not apply to me.

I tried to enable the console to try and force the dialogue but I get the following error when I add -console to the shortcut:

The name "C:\Program Files\Activision\Vampire-Bloodlines.exe"-console' specified in the Target box is not valid. Make sure the path and file name are correct.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you!

You did put a space between the double quote and the hyphen, right? And I hope that trialing single quote isn't actually there - it shouldn't be.

thanks

I didnt put a space in I'll give that a try. That single quote is not actually in the string, just the message. Thanks again!

I'm downloading the 3.1 patch now to take a look at those files and see what might be causing the problem. In the meantime, try this. Load a save point after you've acquired the sarcophagus but before speaking to LaCroix. Then, open the console - you did at least get that working, right? - and enter the command G.Story_State = 60 and then go talk to LaCroix. I have an idea where the problem might be, but I could be wrong.

EDIT: Hmmm... I'm not so sure the story state's the problem, but go ahead and try that anyway. There are only 2 reasons that LaCroix would start the conversation about the sarcophagus being stolen from the museum. Either the game thinks that you've just finished the museum quest, or it has failed to evaluate the starting conditions for the dialogue, in which case it defaults back to the first line of that particular dialogue file. I haven't found anything yet in the 3.1 patch that would cause the game to evaluate the starting conditions incorrectly, but I'll keep looking. Meanwhile, if manually setting the story state to 60 doesn't work, then try doing G.Prince_Reaction = 4

Oh, a couple of questions that might be helpful: Are Beckett and the sarcophagus in the room when you go to talk to LaCroix? Did you start this game before or after you patched to version 3.1?

Thanks

This is my 2nd try at this game, I wasnt happy w/ my first PC. I uninstalled and then re-installed patching w/ 1.2 and then 3.1: the game has run really well until this point.

I just spent the last few hours going back through Chinatown to see if I could find a non corrupted save...no luck (I tried different dialogue options at the Italian Dinner quest to see if that helped...no). I thought maybe it was because I was doing the Tangled Web quests (NOS?) and I am a Torry. I read somewhere that quest is NOS only but it worked for me just fine.

I really like this game and have had few problems until now but this is a deal breaker. I will restart if needed w/ 3.3 but my time is gettting limited as RL will be intruding soon.

Got the console working...thanks

Beckitt is in the room but there is no option to talk. I'll try your console trick and if that doesnt work go back before the NOS quest. Bugs....Grrrrr

Now whenever I bring up the console the game freezes. Any ideas on that?

Standard console protocol. Escape to the menu, open the console with the tilde key (~), enter the commands, and close it by using the tilde key (~) again. I don't know why but using the close box seems to cause problems from inside the game, although I've never had that problem. When you're out of the console, click on continue and off you go.

The Tangled Web quest was always available to all clans. It's Bertrum Tung's quest to get a CD from the warrens that used to be Nosferatu only. The unofficial patches changed that and made it open to everyone also.

The fact that Beckett is present indicates that the story state is okay. When you say there's no option to talk, do you mean to Beckett? He won't talk to you until after LaCroix does, so we need to figure out why LaCroix's dialogue is screwing up first. Or maybe find a way to work around it....

EDIT: Well, if the commands I mentioned previously don't help, there is one more thing you can try: Use the console command G.Story_State=65 and speak to Beckett. Ignore LaCroix completely for now. If that doesn't work, then I'm out of ideas on how to fix this with the console. I hope loading your earlier saved games helps you out. You're almost at the end of the game. Would be a shame to have to start over again because of this.
