USB Keyboard and Mouse not recongized

Post by smass »

Ok folks - this is driving me nuts.

I just got a new motherboard yesterday - an MSI K7N2 Delta board. This is a socket a board that uses the nforce 2 ultra chipset. It has USB 2.0 ports. I replaced my ECS board with a KT266a chipset. So all the other hardware is exactly the same - only upgrade is the board.

I am running Windows 98se - I did not reformat - but all the motherboard resources loaded fine - no problems or driver conflicts whatsoever.

Problem came when I tried to connect my USB keyboard and USB Mouse - which had worked perfectly with my old board. Windows sees the devices - but will not load the drivers - both devices default to "unknown device" under the USB section of device manager. I cannot get the proper drivers to load.

One more thing - I did enable USB keyboard support in the bios - so it is not that. I am wondering if it may have something to do with the USB 2.0 controller. MSI's website is no help and microsofts knowledge base is.....well - you fill in the blanks.

Any ideas?

you might need to install 'human interface device' drivers. Windows doesn't auto detect the keyboard and mouse when you plug them in?

It does auto-detect them - but when you search for the drivers - it does not find them and defaults to "unkown device" - Even when I manually point explorer to the right folder.

I have gone as far as to remove USB completely from the device manager and let windows reload them - once this is done and I reboot and plug in the keyboard I get the same "unknown device issue".

Been reading a website called usbman - he has some suggestions for disabling power management and plug and play support in the bios.

I will try these when I get home. I enabled USB keyboard in bios - but maybe some other bios settings are the culprit.....

Nevermind - I don't know what the heck happened - but when I booted my sytem up last night - everything was fine.

Really strange as I rebooted about two dozen times the night before. One of the fixes I used must have worked - I was just too tired to notice the other night. :p
