Announcing-Banned members
I very well understand that banning of member causes interest, curiosity and sometimes disappointment in other members, but I agree with what most people have posted already, including Buck and the Mods. I've been at SYM for more than a year, and most of the times when a person gets banned, there are several previous warning from the Mods, with a motivation included. A few members have been warned because of posts with racist, discriminative or insulting content. Often you will see that the Mods or Buck also explicity posts that "this is the final warning" when a member repeatedly break forum rules.
However, there are also situations where posters will be banned due to their behaviour towards other members, and this something I think we all should respect that we can't know everything about since it might be sensitive to other members. IMO it really doesn't add anything, and if we are further interested or feel dissatisfied with Buck's decisions, we can always PM or mail Buck or the Mods.

The problem is that sometimes people won't visit GB much or go away for awhile (a la myself for the past week) and then they aren't aware of the reason someone was banned. I think the idea of a sticky explaining who has been Baasied and why has some merit, but ultimately it is up to Buck and we've got to respect his decision here,
@Fable-I agree with you re. that this thread should have been in the GB discussion forum, but I think that it's better that people express their feelings openly, so as to get things said out in the open. No-one (apart from AR, that is) is accusing Buck of enjoying banning people, and I'm certain most of us appreciate the job he has to do and the limitations it imposes upon him. Like Weasel said, being the Administrator means Buck often can't join in discussions like the rest of us can.
I've found the appropriate thread and read why SS got banned, so no-one needs to fill me in. I'll miss SS being around SYM, but I can see the reasons for it.

But this thread shouldn't be used for Buck to explain himself. It will only have a negative impact on the atmosfear. Besides, his reasons are enough for me. No need to debate on it.

IMO it's better if people know what happened and why. I'm not disputing Buck's decision because SS did break the rules in spite of repeated warnings, but I do think the reason/reasons why people got banned should be available if people want to know why it happened. Maybe if people get baaasied there should be an explanantion of why they were banned added to their details in the Updated Anatomy sticky. Buck's always been fair, as far as I can tell, and ultimately this is his site so it's just good manners that we abide by the guidelines he has established.

There is absolutly no reason why people should know why another person was banned.
That is between the banned and Buck.
If the person has friends on the board - these people will usually have other means of contacting each other where their curiousity can be satisfied - but we do not need a "hall of shame" so to speak - cause it is really none of anybodies else buisness.

I guess this is going to be one of those things where I disagree, so I'll just leave the topic alone so as not to flog a dead horse (though I hear flogging dead horses can be an effective anger management technique
).

Ode, I see where you're coming from, but remember that not just SYM regulars would read a thread entitled "Why people got banned" or whatever. If you made a mistake that got you banned, and you regretted it and stuff, or even if you felt justified in what you said, would you want everyone to be able to read about your mistakes and problems? I admit I'm curious as anyone else as to the reasons, but there are many different cases in which people are banned. Often the most "interesting" from a journalistic point of view are the most painful, and stories where someone was banned for posting a porn site and denying it, or insulting random people, aren't as satisfying to a "voyeur" type person (no offense intended). If we told everyone why people got kicked from the forums, don't you think there would be people constantly saying "Why the $%!& did XXX do that, what a moron", and that would make me really angry. Have some respect, if you want to know why a certain person was banned, go to their profile and look up their last posts, or if they've been deleted PM someone who was around then and ask carefully. But I for one don't want memories I have of people spoilt by having their crimes held up for ridicule.
There, rant over.

the one i've always been confused about was darkpoet, i was on vacation when he got banned. i read a few posts by him about the whole september 11th thing and his brother dying, very depressing stuff, but i don't ever remember reading anything that may have gotten him banned. does anybody have the thread?

@ AR Dp was banned for a number of reasons, the only one I will post publically is his use of alter egos after being warned about them.

I agree with the consensus expressed in posts such as those by T'L, Buck, Gwalchmai, Waverly and Mr. Sleep. I elected to write because I wanted to refocus attention on the reality that we are a community, and one of the things that separates a community from a mob is structure and boundaries. Behavior that elicits a member being banned does not simply rest on someone being outlandish or unconventional. It involves violation. At some level, something hurtful has occurred, either to the community as a whole or between individual members. Part of the function of having boundaries is allowing people to feel safe, to feel that their integrity is being respected. Conversely, a milieu in which boundaries are not respected quickly degenerates into the law of the jungle. There has recently been an intense and ongoing societal dialogue about the parameters of personal privacy, and I think this is relevant here. I am against the public posting of banning incidents because I believe the right to individual privacy in such situations outweighs the community's desire to process such incidents publicly. Since the rules are clearly posted, since there is a consensus that the administrator and moderators act fairly, and since those with legitimate concerns are allowed appropriate access to information, I believe the most ethical course is to respect the privacy of all involved. Granted, this involves some measure of trust on the part of community members, but based on my own experience, I think that trust has been fairly earned.

The way I look at banning is that if you do something wrong, you get banned, did anyone kick much of a fuss when Dragon Kurse got banned? Not really, but I happened to see the "Reinstate Sailor Saturn" thread and I was a little bit annoyed. She broke the rules, she pays the price, why should it be different because she has more posts than someone else?
(This was a rhetorical rant in which I agree with banning people if they break the rules, in no way am I arguing about not banning people.)
I don't really it to be public knowledge that someone was banned, the reason I asked is because Saturn had a history of making "comments" and I was intrigued as to what she had said, banning is something that should be humiliating, lets keep it private and quiet...

Like T said, he had an alter ego, Vale O' Wry or something IIRC.
