Announcing Banned members

@Buck: Could we make this a thread to anounce when members are banned and the cause? because it happens that members are banned and unless you present, you don't know about it!

For instance- last week Sailor Saturn was banned. Now I don't know exactly why she was banned (I'm sure you had good cause) but I would have liked to know why, when, or at least where it happend.

Another Example: Dragon Kurse was banned about a month and a half ago, and I was wondering why? Offencive content, multiple identities...

i posted a topic about her being banned, and my sadness about it, but it got deleted.

@morlock - it's not spam, i think bassie might have been the first to get banned,if not, then definitely the most famous

1. Buck did post an explanation of Saturns banning in the now closed Q/A on christianity thread.
2.Dragon Kurse was an alter ego of a banned member
Now for a question, is it really everyones business every single time someone gets banned for posting ads or linking to porn sites or offensive sites or sneaking back under the umpteenth alter ego?
In one case a person was banned for numerouis alter egos, and other behavior dealing with another person on the board..that was a private matter and remained so in spite of numerous peoples curiosity. The only thing an announcement would have done was make someone else feel uncomfortable. IMO its a matter between Buck and the people he was forced to ban. We do answer questions about the subject if it's necessary but I don't think a thread on the subject is appropriate.

@ Nael yes it did. Like I said, if you have an issue pm Buck about it.

@T': I disagree, but I hear you.
IF you want, I've got no problem with you closing or deleting this thread. (Except, of course, for the bad rep it produces)

And you're free to disagree. Like I said IMO it's an issue between Buck and the banned person. We've all answered questions on the subject but a free for all argument thread on "thats unfair" or you're wrong isn't going to happen. Buck doesn't start his day in anticipation of banning people and only does with careful consideration.

My 2 centavos:

The parameters for proper conduct are clearly described in the Forum Rules and the SYM-specific rules. Members who were banned violated those rules. Given this, re-hashing the mistakes of others would not so much serve as cautionary tales but would merely promote gossip. I am content that banned members were dealt with fairly and for the betterment of the rest of the members. Nothing else needs to be discussed.

While I share some of the curiosity that others have expressed, I also know that there are search tools available on this board that will allow me to research an issue without resorting to open discussion.

Moderators are available (via PM) to answer any questions people may have.
That there; exactly the kinda diversion we coulda used.

I kinda think this should have been done as a PM to Buck--just my POV. It feels to me a little like guests holding a meeting in somebody's house to discuss their host's rules. At least, I think this should really be up under the GameBanshee Discussion category. That's the forum for discussions relating to policy.

Does anybody have a serious problem with this move?

While it isreally none of our (Our meaning those not involved in the matter) concern as to who or why someone has been banned, there is still always going to be the lingering feeling of why is someone gone. For the most part, though, the people banned from the forums often turn into a case of no one cares.

Not all, but certainly some of the banned crave attention. That is why most message boards don’t make a habit of discussing banned posters, particularly those who have been trolling or have a habit of sock puppetry. Count me among those that think if you really need to know, PM is the best method of handling it.

FTR: I’m disappointed Miss Saturn got banned too. I certainly didn’t take what she said personally, but I understand the rules.

My opinion is that on many occasions Buck does in fact post in the relevant thread stating if someone has been banned. If he doesn't, it's none of your business.

And AR, just leave it be regarding SS - I think some people are still rather unhappy about something which happened not too long ago, to someone who many regarded as a friend, and don't really want to hear jokes.

One of the things I like most about this group is the wide range of attitudes and ideas that get discussed, from the whimsical to the ultra serious. When you have such differing attitudes, it is important to follow and respect the rules. Everyone gets their say and (in the serious topics) it is the arguments that should take centre ground, not the personalities.

I am going to miss SS, but I think that the mods and Buck do a great job and have set reasonable rules. If they think that someone has oversteped the mark, I trust their judgement. If Buck sees fit to explain his reasons, great. I don't realy want to hear all of the ins and outs of every banning, but if someone I expect to see posts from when I lurk is suddenly gone, then I am interested.

The short version - Great job mods. Sorry to see you go SS.

I agree with Fable and T' on this issue.

People are free to PM us if they have concern about why that member was banned and we will answer those questions to some degree (depending on individual situations).

I think Gwally has hit the nail on the head instead of starting a new thread asking why said person was banned or going on about it in each thread, it is easier just to research why we have banned someone. We don't take that decision lightly, we would prefer not to ban anyone but sometimes these things have to be done.

This is no sucking up to the mods...

...and I truly believe that they are doing the best that they can do to instill stability in this crazy cyberworld of SYM-Game Banshee. As for Morlock's and everyone else's similar concern, why don't you try to click on the banned members profile and check out his/her last few posts? You will get your answers there. :)

In several forums, they have what they called "THE HALL OF SHAME" - but not like Weasels Hall of Shame :D Anyway, the HoS contain the list of member who get banned and their crimes. The most common thing I've found there is posting an advertorial thing like SPAMmail or advertorial link. We on GB are sane enough by not posting this "annoying" thing.

As for Morlock suggestions, IMO it's not necessary to list the "Baassied" members. Those who like to know what happen to "Baassied" member can always track their last post or perhaps PM the mods - like others have already suggested. Leave the option on PMing Bucky as the last resort since he's also busy maintaing the site :)

This topic really should be in the GameBanshee Discussion forum, but since it's already grown to two pages, I'll leave it here with my explanation.

When someone goes too far and breaks the forum rules, I typically will post a reply in the thread to direct them to the rules and to let them know how they've overstepped them. If the same person breaks them again, I'll send them an email telling them that they have been warned and that they could be banned if they continue. If they pay no attention to the first two warnings and continue to break the rules, they get banned.

That's how it should normally go, but a lot of times that isn't the case. Some people will register and instead of entering a legitimite discussion, they'll just spam several forums with advertisements or worse. These people get no warnings, I ban them immediately.

On the flip side of that coin, some members will rarely break the rules. For example, I might warn them a first time, and it'll be several months later before I receive a complaint about something else they've posted. This is the niche that includes Sailor Saturn. I initially gave her two warnings, since they were months apart. Some time after that, she broke the rules again and I decided to ban her for a couple of weeks. When she returned, she stirred no trouble until recently, when I decided enough was enough.

I do not enjoy banning anyone, and I only do so after careful consideration and usually with some discussion with the moderators. When I do decide that someone should be banned, however, I don't think it's something that I should have to announce to the entire userbase. I'm usually hit with several emails as it is (both from the person who was banned and from members who want to know what happened), demanding an explanation. The last thing I want to do is have to explain my decision multiple times, in PMs and emails, as well as here on the forums.
