BioWare has already released their first patch for Dragon Age: Origins, though some of you hardcore types might want to hold off on installing it as it makes the game easier on the "Easy" difficulty setting and increases some of your party characters' statistics on the "Normal" difficulty setting. The v1.01 notes:
• fixed potential corruption of character statistics • fixed portrait appearance sliders when importing a character from the downloadable Character Creator • fixed import for preset face settings from the downloadable Character Creator • made Easy difficulty easier • slightly increased attack, defense, and damage scores for all party members at Normal difficulty • fixed video issues when running on a very wide screen display, including ATI Eyefinity displays
I'm enjoying the reasonable amount of challenge on "Normal", so I'm not sure why such tweaks were necessary.

Probably because ever single PC review seemed to complain about it being too hard.

Characters did seem to do an annoyingly small amount of damage. Fights were a grind-fest. I think it's still reasonably challenging on normal.

The difference on normal is barely noticeable, my characters still get killed fairly often in fights if I don't spam health poultices sometimes.
I can't get my game to open since installing the patch.

Oh man, nothing to change hard difficulty? ...Some of the fade/dream sequences where you have to solo are nearly impossible on hard (at least as a rogue)... I hate to think what the Overpowering difficulty level plays like...

made Easy difficulty easier...
I remember one or two reviewers pointed out this 'persistent scaling' issue where their characters ended up dead just because they were overwhelmed by the increased number of enemies compared to a few levels earlier with a smaller number of enemies. I hope Bioware dialled it down, but it would've been better if they included an option to turn it on/off. :p

I'm not applying any patches unless I start having technical problems with DA:O. So far so good but I've only completed the human noble origin story and Ostagar.
I did however switch the difficulty from normal to easy during the Ostagar tower assault. Maybe I just suck at party management but I was pausing the the game every 3 seconds during combat and still ended up with all my party members dying enough times that I wasn't enjoying the game anymore.

The patch does seem to make things a bit easier. Just prior to installing the patch I had a lot of trouble with an encounter (tried to do it about 5 times - it was a whole bunch of bandits). I saved the game at the beginning of that encounter and installed the patch. After that the bandits went down on the first try and only one of my companions died. I used exactly the same tactics as before (since I was always thiiiiis close to getting it).
