This is effective as a behind-the-scenes method of steering your character in the direction you want him to go, and while it works well for the character you start with, the advantages of this system become more evident when you have other characters in your party too. You can have two of them up front as melee types and supply them with all the melee weapons you come across so they raise their skills and act as a formidable front line for the rest of your party.
