Giving Characters a Theme.

Post by Vetrebond »

When you build characters, do you ever give them a theme ? Or build them influenced by something or someone else ?

I've made a Gunslinger based off Roland of Gilead, who was wicked.

I was working on a cool Dark Wizard that was influenced by the last part of the Uriah Heep song "The Magician's Birthday". I gave him Some Diviniation, Dark Necromancy, Fire, Mental, and Meta. I also dropped a point or two into Melee, and he was shaping up to be quite a lot of fun until my hard drive messed up.

One of the funnest characters I've ever played was a Gnome socialite. He used a gun, but was a master at Haggle and Persuasion. I had a lot of fun trying to get him through places, but I managed to beat the game with him, so he was not bad.

I've been thinking about making a Summoner type wizard, but there's always the question of "do I want him to have offensive spells, like Dark Necromancy, or spells that help your allies, giving him a true support roll.

Anyways, I just wanted to express some of my own ideas and see what ideas you all had. I hope I'm not alone in my idea of "themes".

I've played as a stoic warrior/mage. I pictured him as a haughty Bladesinger-type. He was amazingly powerful.
Also, I played as a standard gunner, with some social skills thrown in. She was your classic fasttalking scoundrel.

I've played as a dwarf with doctorates in smithy and mechanics, with a party consisting of Virgil, a dog and four automatons :D . Also, I've played as a halfling evil thief, a stupid half-ogre, an über-pwner mage (master of force and several levels of dark necromantic, fire and summoning), just finished as a gun-slinger with a doctorate in electricity and gunsmithy. Right now I'm going for a human with bow and throwing mastery , with doctorates in explosives and mechanics. After that I plan to go with a human paladin - 5 ranks of necromantic white and divinity, with strength and constitution boosted to the max, equipped with every arcane item I manage to find during the game. :D

So, yeah, you could say I always theme my characters. That's what roleplay is all about, innit? ^^
What do you want?

I've found this CRPG to be the best at sticking to themes. The game has so much variety and it simply doesn't pay to be a jack of all trades in Arcanum.

Depending on race, background, alignment, and skills, this game above all others can be a very different experience each time through.

I once played a game with a femal mage PC, who recruited every dwarf in the game, no prizes for guessing her name.

Too bad you couldn't rename the dwarves.
