Where are the fish?

Post by Sparrow »

Just started playing this game- it's the most amazing thing I've ever seen on a computer screen.

I have an odd problem with a little miscellaneous quest. Across from Wawnet Inn, just outside the Imperial City, there is a fisherman named Aelwin Merowald. I need to get 12 Rumare Slaughterfish scales for him. I know where the fish are supposed to be, because I've found one of them. But only one of them. I've tried swimming all over Lake Rumare, and there are no fish.

I thought they might show up one or two at a time, and so I've tried returning later, a few times, but that doesn't work either.

So, what's up with the fish?

Try entering another area (even a building), then return to see if the fish regenerate.

As you suspected, they do only show up one at a time while the quest is in progress. In fact, the next fish won't appear until you harvest the scales from the last one (and so on). Unfortunately, this means you can't scout out their locations in advance, because they appear widely spaced out around the lake. Also, I know some people think the compass and quest markers on your map distract from the role-playing elements, but in some cases (like this one) I couldn't finish the quest without them.
Can the answer to this question be "No"?

Could try creating them with console commands, then. Or use the command to complete the current quest, which is completequest (easy one to remember, that). Mind you, I've never tried it, and I have no idea how it work when you have several quests running simultaneously. Presumably one will be completed, but I'm not sure which.

Thanks guys. The compass tip helped a lot, Belthan. By making the quest my "active quest," I get markers taking me to the fish. Hard to play this quest without that. Bagged all 12 fish. Quest done.

Does anyone have an idea that can help me?

I made it my current quest so the compass (green arrow) would hone in on the fish. But eventually it got stuck. I swim all over the place where the green arrow zeros in but I see no fish underwater and nothing floating. About 10 feet away is a different dead one but I have already harvested the scales so I don't see why it doesn't move along.

Please I am a very meager character for 10th level and have trouble finding a quest I can actually complete. I hope to get the reward for this one :)

It just means that the fish are deep in the water. You have to dive, and whack them, to pull them to the surface.

tips for fish quest

I found using the detect life spell very very very helpful in locating the fish underwater, where visibility is quite limited.
use the compass to locate the general location of the fish, then detect life to pinpoint its location.
if you have a water breathing spell, use it as well. try to draw the fish close to the shore, where they can't attack you, and you can easily retreat to rest. if the fish surface, use fire spells on it, they're very effective.

good luck

I found detect life invaluable for this quest.
Just as a side note though don't be tempted to steal the scales back off him, I found I couldn't drop them or use them...
