I'm curious why when asked which type of weapon...mainly referring to swords...most people here say a longsword. Why is this? I have used a bastard sword almost solely since starting the game. It does 1D10 vs 1D8 for a longsword. I stayed away from 2 handed weapons as I opted for the increased AC from my shield. Is there a benefit to the longsword I am missing?

a Longsword benefit, most fighter types are automatically proficient in the longsword and not the bastard sword, in fact it takes a feat for bastard sword proficiency for any class in the game.

It's normally in games also easier to find good longswords then bastard swords. This is especially true in the two expansions.

I did begin with a longsword but changed as soon as I was able. As far as "good" bastard swords...I kind of like the Bloodletter I picked up in SoU. You may be right however because once I specialized in the bastard sword I never paid much attention to the longswords after that.
