Familiar Stats

Post by Snipercon »

I've taken some time to gather the familiar stats at each level. I've attached an excel sheet with everything, so feel free to skip the rest of this post and pick up the file.

To start, A LV1 Wizard gets a familiar, which levels up to equal each odd Wizard level (LV3 and Wizard LV3, up to LV19 at Wizard LV19). Also, familiars are animals except for spiders and beetles which are virmin. This affects rangers favored enemies and perhaps succeptability to hold animal vs hold monster spells (althought I didn't test that).

CASTER BONUS (while familiar is summoned)

Bat +3 Listen
Cat +3 Hide, +3 Move Silently
Rat +2 Fortitude Save
Rabit +1 All Saves
Weasel +2 Reflex Save
Spider +3 Bluff
Pig +3 Diplomacy
Beetle +1 HP per character level

ABILITY SCORES

All familiars start at 6 Intelegence which is the only ability which advances by one at each level up to 15 at LV19.

In Summary

Pick the familiar based on roleplaying or caster bonuses. They are practically useless in a fight. I'll give my opinion on each one.

Bat: A relatively good scout for sneaking rogues (especially early in the game). Its higher wisdom compliments its higest spot-listen skills.

Cat: Nice bonus if you are a sneaking wizard. Might compliment the Arcane Trickster prestige class. Cute and cuddly if thats your thing.

Rat: Helps against Necromancy spells, if for some reason you are alergic to shadow armor. I see no benefit in this familiar unless you are Willard.

Rabit: Good caster bonus. Also cute and cuddly.

Weasel: Decent caster bonus. Name it Riki Tiki Tavi and assume its a mongoose. Too bad there are no snakes in the game.

Spider: Good if you like to bluff people. Aparently Drow like these.

Pig: Good if you like to use diplomacy. Matches the Farmer background trait, although I have never met a farmer-wizard.

Beetle: Best caster bonus. Also least likely to die.

If you are power gaming choose the Beetle if you want help against fighters, the Rabit if you want help against casters, the Weasel if you plan to get Evasion, or the Cat if you go for the Arcane Trickster. If you are roleplaying choose the Spider or Pig if you are a liar or smoth talker, or wichever one is as cuddly or creepy as your character.
