Our post-apocalyptic future?

Post by Monolith »

I've posted it once but it didn't get the attention it deserves. A nice piece of art, by St. Toxic from the RPG Codex forum. But see for yourself...

Is this what Bethsoft will deliver? Our Fallout 3?

I think so...

Discuss.

It's a really nice cartoon, but I don't know what all the symbols mean. Could you explain them?

Which exactly need explanation?

Don't want to paint a gloom picture when we know practically nothing - but I have no faith in bethesda actually putting up a game with quality over graphics and which is challenging (other then simply putting up more monsters).

Some of the symbols on the drawing are level scaling (which takes away from the exploration factor and accomplishment factor from RPGs), the Fallout canon which is being "stepped on" (meaning "lore" will be ignored or altered), soil erosion which I can only interpret as the recent games from Bethesda have required the intellect of a wet blanket to play because the player is being babysat (also on the drawing), for instance with insta-travel and pointer/markers all over all while being hyped so it can "win" the awards from a "critical" gaming community.

I have no faith in Bethesda. They've disappointed me since DaggerFall and I loathed any game where it is up to the community themselves to actually make the game decent (Morrowind/Oblivion - I'm looking at "you") which means the games are little more then graphical displays of a sandbox.
So I think the drawing is painting the future, although one can hope somebody in that company actually likes games.

Thanks. But what do the guys on the shoulders and the 'twitch gaming' mean? (Note: I didn't play Oblivion, but I read a lot about it.)

That guy is Todd Howard, Executive Producer of Oblivion (Here's a pic of him. And Twitch Gaming is a derogatory term for reflex based action games. At least that's the way I understand it.

There is two positive things ive read about fallout 3 so far:
They refuse to make it for a throw away console system.
Its going to remain similar to the dark style of fallout 1 2 and tactics.

I also think that without the original interplay programers this game wont reach its potential.

Please do not post back-to-back like this, when an edit of your former post would have worked just as well :)

Hm, I don't know about that. Having toyed with Terragen in the past I can appreciate those kind of tools.

For those who didn't catch the parody, this thing will probably seem much funnier to you when you see this:

Image

This is a WWII propaganda poster from Nazi Germany.

But yeah, I'm a huge fan of the original Fallout property, and since Troika tanked I can't really see anyone but the original team doing a proper job with it. I probably will still play the Bethesda version, but then again they probably won't deserve my money and support.
