How does defensive casting work?

Post by De_Priester »

Can someone explain to me how defensive casting and improved combat casting works?

I am someone who always works with tanks so I rarely see my wizard getting hit thus I am curious if this is a worthy feat..

Defensive Casting works like this. When it is on, you make a Concentration check to avoid provoking attacks of opportunity. I think you need to beat a DC of 15 to do so. If you make the check, you do not provoke attacks of opportunity when casting the spell and can cast it normally. Otherwise, you provoke them, and if you are hit, you must succeed on a DC based on the damage you took from the blow to avoid being disrupted in your casting.

Combat Casting provides a +4 bonus to rolls that are made when seeing if you are disrupted when hit and take damage while casting.

Okay, so what I've read it's like this

If you fail the DC check while in defensive casting you lose the spell, BUT if you make the check and you cast something you don't trigger attacks of opportunity?

But does this also mean you don't draw aggression while casting like this?

So the downside is casting failure but plus is.....

What it means is yes, if you fail the check with the Defensive Casting Mode on, you fail casting regardless of whether you get it.

If you pass the check, you do not provoke extra attacks from the enemies directly next to you for casting the spell. Lets say you are surrounded by 3 lizardlings. If you cast a spell normally, they will ALL get an extra attack each on you called and Attack of Opportunity (AOO). If you do this in Defensive Casting Mode, and pass the check, they will no longer get an extra attack for that round, keeping your risk of damage far down.
