Can someone fill me in on 5/cold steel, please

Post by Snipercon »

I've see alot of damage resistances number/material (5/cold steel, 10/silver). The way I understand this is silver can bypass werewolves. No problem there, but I have NOT seen anything 5/+3. The closest I saw was a monk's 10/magic (is this the same as 10/+1).

Do materials = magical enhancement (if so what material = what enhancement) or does a weapon have both enchancement and material properties (if so does enhancement pass material resistance)? Also, does a more awesome material (adamantine) also pass through a less awesome material (cold steel) resistance?

Thanks

A "regular" +1 to +5 ( max enhancement bonus ) on a weapon is defined as a magic weapon, so damage resistance/magic applies here.

The resistance allways applies for said material, even a "better" enhanced weapon does not get through the resistance, though it might make enough damage to the creature anyway.

So a Baatezu Devil, Pit Fiend for example has damage reduction 15/good and silver means that you need a good aligned, silver weapon to give it regular damage, every other weapon looses 15 damage points on a succesful hit ( so a powerful weapon might still be able to give it at least a bit damage ).

The reason you have not seen Damage Reduction X/+3 or something like that is because 3.5 dungeons and dragons got rid of that completely. Now there is Damage Reduction X/magic which is bypassed by any form of magical weapons, +1 or +5 it doesn't matter.
