FIGHTER'S GUJILD CONCLUSION (Spoiler needed - I'm stuck again!)

OK, I am taking down the Blackwood Company by killing the Hist Tree in their basement headquarters. I killed all the Company members guarding it (Boy did I get some great loot in the process!) and now I am alone in the room with the tree, the pump, and the vats. The problem is that while my quest prompt told me I had to destroy the tree by deactivating the machinery around it, I can't get any of the machinery to interact. My little grabby hand appears over all of them, but I hit the spacebar, the mouse, and every other key I can think of with no result. I hacked at the Hist Pump with a sword and shocked it with my staff, all to no avail. How do I shut the bloody thing off and kill the evil tree?
