I have done google searches out the wazoo, but so far, the cheapest laptop of the quality I want is over 600 dollars.
Now, I will probably have that 600 dollars, but the money I am going to use to buy the laptop is my financial aid to go to college, so I'd like to save as much as possible if I can.

So, if anybody knows where I can get a laptop (Preferablly non dell, compaq, or gateway) of this quality but for possibly cheaper, that would rock.
Buying a laptop.

1500 to 2000 MhZ processor (1.5 to 2.0 GhZ)
256-512 Mb Ram.
40 gigabyte space minimum.
14 inch display minimum.
Must have a copy of windows XP and a CD.
Must have a Wireless connection to the internet.
I'm using most of this for school, and a lot of my classes are online classes, so when I'm at the college, I need a place to be able to do my homework fairly easily

Hmm, yeah, I don't get my check for a while, so no good on that. However, Acer is a brand I've heard of and I know is usually pretty cheap and effective, so I can check them out along with IBM.
Thanks though.

Is there any particular reason you do not want a Dell laptop? With many of the online coupons that are available you could certainly get a good system that way.
My laptop was a little over $2,400 originally but after an online coupon that I found I only paid $1,500, which needless to say made me very happy.
I bought my cousin a nearly identical version of the laptop that I got except not so high-end since she just needed it for college and isn't a developer. Her's was originally $1,900 and after a coupon was $1,100.
We have had our laptops for just under 2 years now and neither of us have had any problems.
Don't get me wrong in that I am not a Dell fanboy by any stretch. I prefer Sony laptops personally but they are too expensive for what they offer, which is why I bought a Dell this time around and probably will again in the next few months.

I've had many past experiences with Dell, Gateway, and Compaq.
Compaq's break so easily, and finding parts that will work with a compaq is pretty hard.
Gateways and dells, while great on the price at first, will really just bite you where it counts later. There warrenties are insanely expensive, and many choose not to get one, which if they don't get one, and there computer breaks down, they have to order DELL parts to work in there PC. They have to order a Dell hard drive, it can't be maxtor or segate, it has to be dell as that's the only one that will work. Same with gateway.
Personally, even though HP's are easy to break down, they're easy to fix, so those are my preferences, but they were a little on the pricy side for what I want when I looked it through.
I did however, find an acer notebook from walmart dot com, so I have something that is good at least.
