Did you try looking here?

SWC
Sir Edmund: "Should you obey the lord who asks you to put a village of innocents to the torch? Is that chivalrous? Is it noble?"
Me: "It's a great way to get promoted, I know that much."

Most of these places go into "lock down" mode once you enter, forcing you to complete your objective before you leave.

The only exception to this rule is one late in the game, where if you do leave you can't get back in again, so I would advise saving before entering any of these into a different save game, in case you decide you aren't ready for it yet.

As for that particular room, (if it is the room I am thinking of), there is a button behind a chest in the room that opens part of the wall for a period of time.
