I was swimming off the southern coast below Ebonhart...

I found a grotto...

there was some really nice things there...

and a guy with a sad tale of how he drank from the wrong flask...

and poisoned himself!

Is this just a sad story, or is there something I am missing?

thanks in advance...

I don't think I ever found this guy. I don't think he is associated with any guild quest of any kind, but he could be part of an obscure city quest, or wilderness quest. Maybe, he's just one of those funky quirky npc's that Bethesda threw in.

Could you possibly post a map with the location of the cave?

spoiler reply

he is in the turret in the sunken dwarven ruins that you find after you enter the 'Murdan Grotto' (spelling?) south of Ebonhart...

It's not part of a quest, but there is something very special. On his body should be a key. If you searched upstairs before you went into the tower, you may have found a locked and trapped table. This key goes to that table, and inside that table is another key. Now go through the underwater hallway, the one that is straight. You may have to fight Slaughterfish, but you will come to some stairs. Go up the stairs and you should find another ladder, this one is above water. The new key goes here and inside is a Centurion Gaurdian, it will be this no matter what level you are and he is tough. I recommend sneaking up behind him and sneak attacking and if you're lucky, it will fell him in the one hit. On him is a key to a locked cabinet which contains a special item...I'm not sure if this is a spoiler, but it is a Dragonbone Curiss with 100% fire resistance. And if you search around the room you should also find a Potion of Heroism. I'm not sure of it's effects, my Alchemy is pitiful, but it should be good. Now I've only come across this potion twice it the game, so it is a rarity. :D
