I'm having problems with installed programs creating read-only directories whose read-only flag I can't alter. Hell, I can't even paste files I want into those directories, and I can't install patches. This doesn't happen to most products, but to a few, and it's an annoyance.
I suspect it has to do with the way my admin controls were set up when this computer was built for me. Can anyone walk me through the steps of checking my controls as admin? I'm using a WinXP Personal platform, and can pass along any other details you might need.

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> User Accounts.
From there you can check whether or not you have administrative powers.
If you don't, well you simply have to log in as an administrator and change it (the easiest way to do this is log in under 'administrator', or if that isn't there, simply boot up in safe mode and it becomes available (yep, brilliant security isn't it, I've used it to get into my brother's computer, but that's a story for another time...)).
And if you do, well then I need to have a bit more of a think about it.
Btw, if you don't know, you can boot up in safe mode by pressing F8 during the boot up phase of your computer.
From there you can check whether or not you have administrative powers.
