Sleep spell? You are using an area effect spell, you don't need to be within range of his spells. Move back until he is out of sight (you need to do this prior to him turning red or he will give chase.) You will also need more than 4 charges.

Then darkness took me, and I strayed out of thought and time
A good strategy that I used is to have Nalia and Aerie both in the party, so they can cast multiple Cloudkills.
If you can't find a wand or if it doesn't have enough charges, buy a bunch of cloudkill scrolls and use those instead.
Stand where he can't see you and just start casting, don't stop until you've done at least 6 or 7.
You'll know if he's being affected or not because it'll say at the bottom of the screen.
Firkraag- Magic Resistance,
or
Nalia/Aerie/Whoever did 5 damage to Firkraag.
if it doesn't say one of those, then he's out of range, and you'll have to reload and try again.
Once he's been poisoned alot, have a mage cast Breach on him and send in all your fighters to take him down.
Also, be sure not to wait too long before sending in your fighters or he'll heal himself and then you're screwed. However, if you go in too early, he'll knock your party all over the place.
Trial and error, my friend, trial and error.

Dave: I got dibs on the tin cup!
Sara: I don't think these guys really understand the concept of Lawful Good Characters.
Brian: Hey, you gotta take your experience points where you can get 'em.
