Challenge and Fun

Post by Quest Master »

I want a hard fight. When I get my booty wipped, I get excited. Bring it on!

I think that a lot of us are like that. We want these games to challenge us and bring out the fun. And that's true, I think cheese and push-over dragons are disappointing, but is it a requirement?

I propose we are in a difficult time, ladies and gentlemen. We are in the post-ToB era. Winternights isn't coming out until Spring, from what I've last heard, and there are no other BG games on the slate.

So how do we have fun with BG? I've soloed as bards and played with 10 strengths, and everything I can think of to make these games hard, but like all of us, towards the end we're still mega-powerful, and the enemies fall before us.

Its our wits, our skills, our cunning, and our expertese which is beating us down, and we can't delete that.

So how do we keep these games fun?

I propose that we enjoy the little things again. That we relax from the desire for a challenge and enjoy the ambiance. The NPCs calling out "Move that box outta my way" and the sounds of nature. Did you know there are a variety of different, interesting bird calls in BG?

And the scenery can be downright lovely. Imagine yourself there, sitting among the flowers, or perched atop the waterfall.

I propose, that when an NPC starts talking to us, we don't super-click through it, but read what the writer had to say. Enjoy the roleplaying.

Enjoy the experience.

I'm currently going through iwd with only 2 people on hof mode. solo would be a mighty challenge. much harder than anything BG2 has to offer.

Not BG games, no, but PoR is due out in a month, Arcanum is just out now, and Wizardry VII is supposed to be out around the holiday season. That leaves the big one:

The Unofficial Sequel to BG2, which is being worked on even as we speak. I don't know when it's due out, but from the info I've seen and heard, it promises to be very good.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.
