You can store items in a house you have bought.

Houses are the only safe place (your houses mind you), everything else is fair game for the NPCs.

There's a good mod that Fable linked to as well here, that gives you storage in every guild, but that's just a chest per guild. Oh and be careful not to put all your stuff in one place even in your house, ie a lot of items of the same kind seem to trigger a bug of a sort in some people, that makes those items disappear.
And He whispered to me in the darkness as we lay together, Tell Me where to touch you so that I can drive you insane; tell Me where to touch you to give you ultimate pleasure, tell Me where to touch you so that we will truly own each other. And I kissed Him softly and whispered back, Touch my mind.

I leave my items near shops, people walk over them sometime but noone ever touches it, everything is still there several days later.

I have not yet tried to store stuff long-term. But I dump stuff in chests at night, when I am bringing in several loads of stuff from adventuring, then take it from the chest to the shops when they open.
A house is what I want, but houses tend to be expensive...

Don't count on this working. The game does respawning sweeps periodically of each city.
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

can i just confirm with those that have tried it, can you use any item in your house to safely store stuff or do you specifically need to buy a storage area in your house and only store stuff in the provided chest?

Just dump them on the floor, I do it, even though my Skingrad house is totally equiped. The display cases are useless, so I just pile it where I am. Though as I've said I do avoid large groupings of items, especially if we are speaking about the same kind of items.
