Which camera mode do you use?

Post by Denethorn »

Which camera view do you use? I'd find a player's choice quite interesting since some argue for immersion in 1st person POV, which I used in Morrowind. But in Oblivion I find my character animations are so fluid I'm using the 3rd person POV far more, if only Bethsoft implemented a nice crosshair.

I'm finding that the battles are better in 3rd Person as opposed to FPV. I can follow the enemy movements better. I also like using 3rd PV when galloping across the terrain on my horse.

Most other times, I use FPV in order to take in the scenery.

I play without the crosshair at all. The only time I see anything like that is while sneaking.

I use the mouse scroll all the time to go in and out of views - it's great. I didn't think I would use 3rd person as much as I have, but it's probably around 55% fp and 45% 3rd person.

I'm loving every aspect of this except the scaling.

I've seen alot of members on the official forums complain about that. What exactly do they mean by scaling?

You shouldn't have asked. ;) Moderators feel free to make this a new thread since it goes way off topic...

Well, I'm not that far into the game but apparently it gets worse... I first noticed the effects last night and it sucks.

To allow gamers to go anywhere in the game, do whatever they want to do AND keep it challenging the developers decided to have the monsters scale to your level. Meaning I can go in a cave right outside of the city with my 1st level character or wait and do it with my 20th level character later in the game and the computer would adjust the monster so it's always a challenge. Sounds good, right? In theory.

What's happening to gamers everywhere is this:
Lets say you are a level 5 thief and you fight a wolf right outside of an inn. You kill him with 2 swings of your steel shortsword and it says "you should rest and level up." So you go in the inn and do that.

You come out of the inn and there is another wolf there. So you have leveled up and are now a level 6 theif and expect to be a little bit better at attacking this wolf. Only your not, because the wolf has also leveled up.

...And to make matters worse for some reason the wolf that previously took 2 swings with your steel shortsword now takes 3 after you have "leveled up."

Well, that is because of a number of factors.

First being, you still have a steel shortsword and the computer thinks that a level 6 thief should have something that does more damage than that and have scaled the monsters for that purpose.

Secondly, the monsters level up with more powerful attacks (strength), more health (endurance) and a better armor rating (whatever attribute that is). So now, for you to be on equal footing with them you would have to have leveled the same way. Only you're a theif and put some of your points in the "level up" to security instead of strength this time. So now the wolfs defense and armor have gone up, but your attack hasn't and now it takes 3-4 hits for you to kill the exact same creature.

Go to a river bed and see if that mudcrab that you used to be able to kill with one blow now takes two (even with a better sword and more experience!). This is what I have experienced so far (I'm only level 5 right now). Apparently, it gets worse the more you "level up." I hear if you wait till level 15 to do the main quest it's almost impossible because the other creatures are so advanced.

It makes "leveling up" pointless and counter productive. It's not even stagnant it's actually leveling down every time you sleep and "level up." IF you level up "right" you might be able to break even each time, but you never advance. There's just no reward in it. The fact that my begining character is most powerfull he will ever be in the game is depressing as a rpg fan.

But it's not just that... the scaling effects almost everything. It effects the locks on chests too. If you never level up all of them will stay between very easy to average. The armor or weapons that are in stores or dropped from your enemy depends solely on your level. Meaning you can only get the good stuff once you leveled up and need it. So... that better sword that you wanted - that you've been searching so long for - its only purpose is to bring that wolf from three hits down to 2 again. But you could have done that if you just didn't level up in the first place. It's so screwed up.

I love the game and am praying a patch or mod comes out soon!

You're right, is a bit lengthly, thanks for clearing it up for me though :p

I'm still level three and enjoying the game (for the moment), but I can see the issues that might arise. Have to see how bad it is when I come to it.

When fighting I use first person, but when traveling around I use 3rd person. I'll sometimes travel in first person if I'm looking for something, cuz the view is closer so it makes it easier.

Well I use both only when I am sneaking, fighting it is always 1st person.

About the leveling up - I am pleased with it actually for the most part. And it is not true that it is impossible to go through the main quest, it just gets really, really hard but if you are taking care of your skills the right way it should be possible. Indeed it's not the leveling up that's the problem but the fact that though you may be lvl 10, the important skills may not be adequate. It is good to know about this in advance though, so you can decide if you really want to take your char in a certain direction.

*gasp* Must you tell me now that I'm level 12 already? (I still haven't seen that jauffre dude)

On Camera mode: I use primarily 1st person view, because I use the strafe buttons quite often and strafe-walking (which I inherited from shooters) just looks real bad in 3rd person.

However, I use 3rd person for sitting on a horse and getting killed. I like getting killed less.

I use first person mostly. I use third person when I am outdoors fighting with a melee weapon because my arm and weapon flicker and my comp lags if I don't. I'm still waiting for a memory upgrade that I hope will come today.

There's nothing like playing in first person and turning around in someone's house or whatever and finding an npc or monster standing right behind you. I just wish that first person could give more of a peripheral view though. But I guess that's somewhere off in the future.

I prefer 3d person, it's like wathcing a really coll interactive movie :) But it's nearly impossible to aim range attacks though, the crosshair, ie the sneakicon is not centered right, a pitty.

Frodo1: It's possible to change the fov, field of view, kind of. The game creates a folder in your Documents and Settings somewhere, My Games\Oblivon. In the file Oblivion.ini there is a line fDefaultFOV=75.0000, try different figures, 90 should feel about right.
