how can u unlock the effects and know which effect will be used?

That has to do with alchemy. I read about that in the 'Basics of Alchemy' book. (I don't remember the exact title, but books can provide you with handy information sometimes)

The better you are at alchemy, the more effects you will be able to see.

You can eat products you find. This will give you not much of an effect. By making a potion out of 2 ingredients, the effect is increased.

You can make potions if you have a mortal and pestle (alembic, calc--something and the other apparatus increase positive effects, decrease negative effects or -another something-... Read all about it in the book about Alchemy.)

You can make potions out of ingredients that have the same effect. I highlighted that because it is important.

For instance: a bread loaf has restore fatigue and so does rice. So combining those (with your mortal and pestle), creates a restore fatigue potion.

So, gather ingredients and start grinding!
