When you enter the dark cave in Korriban, close to the enterance is a sith corpse with a datapad. By reading this datapad you will find out about the Sith attempts to clear the Shyrack infestation out of the cave, and will trigger a quest to find out about an expedition.
Is it actually possible to complete this quest? Or is it just one of the dreadfully sad dead-ends that have made KOTOR II such a sorely wounded game?

Just perform all the actions in the cave. I believe this one is simply to wipe out the Shyrack. Then it leaves your journal unfinished quests.
