Help -lots of problems

Post by Fiona »

Can anybody help me with these things?

My computer has been losing functions ever since I got a new graphics card. The service people told me I had to return it to the "factory settings" and wouldn't come and help till I had done this. I have spent two full evenings doing this and now I have these problems:

1. GB doesn't remember me. I don't know how to get it to do that but it used to
2. That matters because I have a lap top on which the middle numbers (5 and 6) imagine they are f and j. The password GB issued is a number using a 6 so I can't get in from the laptop. Otherwise GB is Ok on the laptop
3. I usually use a PC. The PC does take numbers so I can log on there. But the screen is so wide that I can't view it without scrolling and it is annoying. This is not true for other sites, only GB
4. I tried to get a new log in but the machine does that through e-mail and I have lost access to my e-mail for some reason. It doesn't recognise me or something, so that doesn't work
5. I changed the display setting so now this is typing really big but it didn't help with the wide screen problem
6. I used the buttons of the front of the machine (where the degauss thing is) and minimised the horizontal bit. That didn't help either

I am stuck. Any ideas?

to get gb to remember you you'll probably need to change your cookies settings. not sure which browser you use, but if its IE then if you go to tools and options you should be able to find the settings.

have you checked that your email settings (password etc.) are correct and that the addresses for the account (if its something like outlook) are correct?

other than that, not really sure what the problem might be. sorry.

Thanks, Mr sir. I use Firefox.Any idea how to change cookes there?

I have no idea about the e-mail. I don't know how to check those things. It certainly asks for a username and password but the ones I thought I had don't work at all. I don't know how to get new ones without the old ones either.

edit. I found a bit in tools about cookies and it says the GB cookies are enabled. That is how it should be, yes?

Okay, I'll try to help you too. :)

As a user of Firefox, I can help you with the cookies/password issue. Go to 'Tools -> Options'. Then choose the 'Privacy' tab. Click 'Saved Form Information' and choose yes. Then 'Saved Passwords' and choose yes. Finally, 'Cookies', and once again, tick the top one.

Hopefully that'll help for a bit of that.

Now, about your password. Go to 'Profile' (in the GB bar just below the ad at the top) -> choose 'Edit Email & Password' (in the side bar), and then change your password to something suitable, that you can type.

For the PC problem, it could be your resolution. Ever since the update, I believe this site only handles 1024 x 768 and up. So, to check this, go to your desktop, right click, and choose 'Properties'. Then choose 'Settings' at the far right of the tabs. Then slide the bar until it is '1024 x 768' (you can choose higher, but just test that).

Dinner ready, I'll be back to post some more in a little while.

Good luck with that so far.

Thanks DJ. Done the first two and I will see if it works

The resolution slider thing won't change. It doesn't let me move it though it seems to be a slider. I have to go to work but if you have any more ideas I'll try to work them when I get back. :)

What graphics card did you have originally, and what did you change it to? Also, when you changed graphics cards, did you completely un-install the old drivers before you changed cards and installed the new drivers? A lot of cards can cause problems if you simply install the new card and just install it's drivers over the old drivers without removing them.

That could have an effect on the wide screen GB display. Try setting your resolution to something like 1024 X 768 and see if that helps any. Like I said, if you didn't remove the old drivers first it could cause all kinds of problems with your display and so on.

As far as logging into GB is concerned, if you have it enabled for cookies, then it should remember you. Although sometimes when I redo my system it takes a couple logins to take for some reason. Of course, my computer is possessed ;)

There's also the Zoom setting in the browser, though I don't know where that would be found in Firefox. Zooming out would be less effective than increasing the resolution but it's something...

Thank you everybody for your help. The cookies thing and the password thing worked so it now remembers me. I have just spent over an hour on the phone with the service people and they have managed to make the slider thing work with something called VGA. Sadly it now won't scroll and I don't have MSN or e-mail any more. They have agreed "as a courtesy" after I tried to speak to a gaffer, to send an engineer to replace the graphics card because apparently this one hasn't got a driver of any kind. Helpfully they cannot give a time to call until the day they come and they only work 9-5 monday to friday and I can't do that. I have already taken time off to try to sort this this afternoon

So what I need now is a machine gun. Has anyone got a source?

By dint of persistence (and caving it to their entirely unreasonable demands) I have now got a driver for the graphics card and I am told this will make all the difference. I don't have time to check things properly but I just wanted to thank everyone again for the help :)

I don't know if you'll still have email problems or whether this would help fix them (Assuming you use Outlook Express) , but I just came across some email retrieval software:
http://www.scandbx.com/?adcampaign=GSG1&keyword=13

It is not freeware, but there's a demo. I don't know if the demo version does a complete job, and I'm not sure if it's any help, but I wanted to post the link just in case :)

Just one more comment about your 5 and 6 keys not being mapped correctly. There are a couple of ways around it
  1. Use Excel to put a 5 or 6 into a cell, then copy and paste into where you need a 5 or 6
  2. Open the character map (Start Menu >> Accessories >> System Tools >> Character Map) and do the same copy/paste
  3. Open the calculator (Start Menu >> Accessories >> Calculator) and use copy/paste
But it could be something as simple as a number lock setting. But if only 5 and 6 cause problems that may not be it. Have you plugged a full sized keyboard in to see if it works? If a full size keyboard works there may be some crossed wires that short the 5 and 6 to f and j.

Thanks to both of you. I am thoroughly bored with the whole problem now, since I can't even get the internet now the PC has been mended. I refuse to think about it tonight, but I will try those helpful suggestions when I get my second wind :)
