Scout in 1.4

Post by swcarter »

Have people been having luck with the scout skill in 1.4? I just went through the abandoned theater leading up to Fargrove, and I wasn't able to detect the button that opens the secret room there. I tried it with scout up to 4, which seems plenty high for such an early dungeon, but so far no luck, and I'm beginning to wonder if you have to do something to "activate" scout, or if it even does anything.

Me: "It's a great way to get promoted, I know that much."

I've noticed that Scout is very good by level 3 for adding nearby enemies, loot containers, and items on the ground. Otherwise, at level 4 I found it useful in the Naga Temple for finding buttons and doors. I too noticed that it didn't help in the sewers, and, I found that it didn't help finding the button in the sub-floor below Custard Mansion.

I'll be interested to see what you find later on with the skill.

I've been running with Scout 2, and enemies and usable objects show up at that level. (I thought the new things on the minimap might have just been a 1.4 addition, but perhaps they're related to Scout.) Then I save my game and try bumping up Scout whenever I come to something where it looks like I might be able to detect it, but so far no luck. How high have you gotten your Scout skill?

Most of the characters I played had Scout at lvl 5 and could spot nearby enemies, containers, interactable features (like buttons) and NPCs.

By the way, don't know if this is new or something, but when you belong to the celestial order, the priest at the Temple of the Empyrean sells "Crystals of Vision", which (I suppose) raise your scout skill to the maximum level, revealing all the map (whether global map, or dungeon maps), let's you spot enemies and NPCs on the map, as soon as they are in mapping range, and shows all buttons and secret rooms in dungeons, for a period of time. It's a very useful spell, and now I use it all the time instead of spending any points in Scout. Depending on your level in Celestial Magic, the crystal lasts long enough, for it to recharge again, before it's effects are over (I have 12 Celestial Magic and 2 or so in Channel, and the effects lasts much longer than it needs to recharge), which makes you only need one of them, and make it very cheap.

After finding out this crystal's usefulness, I decided not to put any points in scout anymore for any of my characters. It's much better to find one of those crystals by myself, if the character doesn't belong to the celestial order.

Sorry if this went a bit off-topic, I just think it might be useful info.

After leaving Fargrove, I was able to find hidden buttons, levers, and doors using Scout at level 3. I don't know if putting extra points in helps with the range for finding hidden interactive objects or not.

As for Crystals of Vision, do they actually drop from containers? If you've had them drop, where was it? The problem with crystals for a non-adept type of character is that there must be a very short duration (under a minute, perhaps longer in this unique case?) followed by a lengthy regen time. A few points in Scout costs almost nothing experience points wise. How does CoV work? Does one use permanently reveal the whole map or the area of the map your in? Or, does the effect wear off and the map goes dark again? Personally, I think I'd prefer to keep the map dark until I visit an area. It tends to help me figure out where I've been. And, it's not like its difficult to navigate the world now that the automap feature is working.

Edit: for clarification, I used Scout at level 4 with a character, restarted and visited the Naga Temple using the skill at level 3.

"it didn't help finding the button in the sub-floor below Custard Mansion"

I am not sure what this is referring to... is this a new part of the game? (I am still on V3 so I might be wasting time if it is new to V4)

thanks, mike

It's an old part of the game. There's a loose brick in Custard Mansion that opens a secret room. But the secret room is (or at least was) empty, so not finding it isn't a big deal.

Btw, I went back to the theater with Scout 5 and still couldn't detect the button there.
