Routerz =.=

Post by Rookierookie »

I'm going to move the family desktop into my room very soon, leaving my parents with their laptop. However, to have both computers connected to the internet at the same time, I'll need a router. I'm currently using ADSL.

So the first thing I'm going to ask is, which routers are good? I need wired connectivity and wired connectivity ONLY, but I'll prefer not to have the router affect gaming performance.

The second thing I'm going to ask is, how the *BLEEP* am I going to install it? My room is two rooms away from my parents'. While there is already an existing telephone line plug on the wall that allows me to put in the network cable, I have no idea how to install the router. Where do I put it? How to I connect both computers to it? Do I have to trail cables all over the house?

Finally, can anyone tell me if this "thing" called NEC NTA-3410 is a router? It looks like a router, my computer is connected through another "thing" that refers to itself as "Excelsus Z-Blocker Z-200UK" (which I assume translates telephone signal to network signals) and finally to the telephone line plug, but I'm not sure if it can act as a router, and I've heard it referred to as a "modem". Google turns out nothing, nothing and nothing. What does it do?

For the time being I can live with not going online while my parents are using the computer (which, fortunately, isn't very long; and usually only when I'm not at home), but I would dearly like to solve this problem as soon as possible.

For a while, my spouse and I considered getting a router along this line, but in the end went with a D-Link to have both our computers hooked up.

From what you want, it could only be common sense that the wires have to go somewhere, and more than likely you will have either to drag wires around your house, or you can drill holes through your walls near the ceiling to run the cable through.

If you choose the run the cable, I recommend trying to shove it as deeply into the crack where the carpet meets the wall. If there is no carpet, then just try to keep it as close to the wall as possible.

The router itself should hook directly onto your computer, with another, larger piece of machinery near the 'main' computer hooked to the ISP. It was simple enough with the D-Link, so I am guessing that it is the same thing, without the transmission devices and with cables instead. You will end up hooking your network cable to the router, instead of the computer, and from that router another cable will come to your computer. Another capble will be sent to the other computer. Other than that, it is pretty much straight forward with the power cables.

I used a router so that I could have internet access on a computer that before did not have it, so it may not apply the same to you as it did to me.

If it is working correctly, than online gaming should not be effected, and if it is, then it will not be totally noticeable. The computer I am on now is the one that we have connected to the other, and it still seems faster than the other.
