I must be blind but I can't find Bowerstone North...do I have to do more in the game before I can go there?? Also how do I get the magic spell to change from lightning to fire ball and others????

You have to compete in the Arena before you can reach Bowerstone North.
I don't remember the mechanics for changing your active spell, and it probably depends on whether you're playing the Xbox or PC version. If the version you're playing lists hotkeys (under options), then you can find the answer there.
