If you haven't purchased anything yet, I would go for the Gold Edition (or what ever it may be called, I've seen many names) which holds the original game and both addons SoU and HotU. This will get you all the official content.

There are also Premium Modules available for purchase online that add even more campaigns, but you still need the original game (and possibly the addons too, true anyone?) to play them. On top of that there are literally hundreds of user created modules to download/play, though obviously the level of quality varies a lot on those.

Having not played at all online myself, I'm not very familiar with that aspect of the game, but I would imagine there are tons of options to choose from there aswell.

i've never used the online thing either but i'd recommend getting the pack which has both official expansions as well as the original game as you get more classes and spells etc. by installing both expansions. they are also really good fun to play.

There is tons of options of online play. If you can find a type which supports your playstyle (and you most likely can) and have the time to play online (requiers more time then normal playing, due to being a part of an online community) - then the longevity of this game is vast indeed.
