This has to be a bug in the program.
Has anyone noticed that if you use a cleric (not sure if the gender matters, but I'm using a female cleric) and talk to the townspeople in the bar of Kuldahar, they will ALWAYS give you a garnet gem to help you in your adventuring in the Vale of Shadows?
Here's how to get lots of garnet gems:
My party, after helping to recover Mirek's heirloom necklace, goes to the bar in Kuldahar. Using my cleric I talk to a townsperson (not the barmaid or bartender), I select the conversation thread that asks the townsperson for information on Kuldahar IN GENERAL (There's another thread that asks about KUldahar ITSELF, but don't choose that one.).
The conversation will then revolve around a discussion of the Vale of Shadows and how the townsperson was impressed by your recovery of Mirek's heirloom necklace. Always select conversation threads that ask about the Vale.
The townsperson will then mention Kressalek being buried in the Vale, then about evil priests called Bonedancers. Always select the threads that ask the townsperson more about Kressalek, priests, and then Bonedancers. Finally, the townsperson will feel sympathy for your party and give you a garnet gem so that you can sell it and buy some weapons to take on the undead in the Vale.
I've been able to initiate this conversation thread multiple times with the same townsperson and accumulating a ton of garnet gems that I've been selling to outfit my party with the cool magic weapons and armor found in the blacksmith's shoppe.
But this must be a bug in the program which makes me wonder if I didn't install the patch correctly. Has anyone had this happen before?

Yes, I've had this happen before, and yes it is a bug.
You get the "Garnet" dialogue string every third time you talk to any "non-special" (e.g. named) townsperson. It works for any good cleric, inside the tavern or out.
The supply appears to be infinite. If you find three people together, you can go around in a circle, and have the same individual give you scores of garnets. I tried it once, and stopped at a hundred.
