Thief question

Post by black »

Just got BG1 at last.. phew! I was getting tired of BG2 :P
Well.. i'm a good-hearted thing myself but i like evil parties. Anyone got bothered that there isn't a good "evil" thief in the game? I hate multi or dual characters. What i want is a thief that's not afraid to rob a house! That Imoen is such a sissy!
In BG2 i didn't have this problem. I had my mage, korgan and viconia but now i'm not so sure when i'll get the spell Knock... or if it will help me that much.
What i want to ask.. is there a way to play just with a dwarf fighter (myself) edwin and viconia? Do i NEED a (grrr.. hate`em) thief? I don't care about the difficulty of the game.. i'll manage with just 3 characters but is it imperative to have a thief?

You could survive without a thief (in most cases) but it won't be easy. Think of all the treasure beyond reach and locked doors. Not to forget the deadly traps, though many can be avoided.

Coran and Imoen too. It depends whether you wish to play with a party or solo.

It's nearly impossible to finish Durlag's Tower without a Thief. There are so many traps and locks throughout the game, I consider a Thief to be indispensible.

Why are you calling Imoen a "sissy"? She whined a little in BG2 (torture has a way of making people do that), but in BG1, she's a street-smart little punk who will never abandon you no matter how vile you become. She's also the best Thief in the game due to her stats and the fact that she's single-class.

For an evil Thief character, you can't do much better than Montaron ("And the rivers run red!") but as you're aware, he is a multi-class character.

If you decide that you want a Thief, a dwarven Fighter, Edwin, and Viconia in your party, then you might consider making your main character a Thief and using Kagain (he's a dwarven Fighter). That way, you couldn't complain about the quality of your Thief (although he'd still be the class you seem to hate so much).

That's true.. i can't stand them :D
Can i have Montaron without that Xzar? I thought they came like Jahiera and Khalid... And when i have more than 3 characters it feels crowded. 4 is the limit for me.
But if you say Imoen won't quit on me no matter how evil i'll turn i think i'll stick to her.
It's quite incomprehensible to me how can a thief be a good-aligned character. I remember that's why i hated and couldn't keep any paladin nearby in bg2. "no need for reward.. dooing good deeds is enough for us.. don't listen to <char name>".... reform party... kick the party pooper out.

Well, it's always possible for Xzar to have a little "accident". You are evil, right?

It's just a pity, once someone has one of these 'accidents' and they're removed from the party, they can't be brought back :( .

I guess i'll keep Imoen if there's no pure thief in the game. She's pretty good actualy.
SPOILERISH I managed to pickpocket both of Drizzt's weapons off of him but the +5 Scimitar can't be used by evil characters. ARGH!
Can someone try to answer my other thread please? I'm quite stuck with or without a thief...

I think Coran beats Imoen generally in the game and I find it helps to keep the rep. mid-level (around 10) so then you can have the best charcters in the game regardless of alignment. Just watch out for disputes.
Coran is more powerful and able to use a longbow as he is a fighter/thief mix.
I ended up with a party with both good and evil working just fine together such as the Lawful Evil Kagain and Chaotic Good Coran.

Oh.. btw.. Can't find my way to cloakwood either. Is this area supposed to appear on the map after you did something in the game or is this version of mine a little bug-ish? :(

You have to get the documents from Tazok's tent to open up Cloakwood. :(

WHAT? AFAIK it's not possible to steal BOTH of his weapons since you can't steal equipped stuff. Cos there's no support for 2 weapons in BG, Drizzt is actually holding only 1 weapon and the other is in his inventory, that's why you can pick pocket it from him.

I thought so too.. until i got the second sword :D
Maybe it's because he's so high-level and stuff. His character HAS 2 swords in his hands when he attacks you. Even after i looted them from him he still attacked me with 2 swords and killed me instantly.

Drizzt and other NPCs do not wield weapons the same way your characters do. The computer entity known as "Drizzt" does not use his own scimitars. Special, non-droppabe items are assigned to his hands. I suppose you could think of them as fists. As for his scimitars, one of them is in a quick slot (where it can be pickpocketed) and the other one is on his head. I suppose you could pretend that he is wielding the latter with his teeth. :)

I can't remember ever being able to pickpocket Twinkle. Perhaps it could be done in the original, unpatched version of the game, or perhaps a mod could put Twinkle in Drizzt's quick slot next to Frostbrand--or even put both of Drizzt's weapons in his hands so that he could actually use his own weapons. But I've never heard of such a thing.
