BG1 REfusing to Install Because It's Still A Program?

Post by Aqua-chan »

I made the mistake of thinking my computer could handle having Baldur's Gate TuTu. :o

Anyway, after the system succombed to bugs and frequent crashed, I uninstalled TuTu, BGII, and BGI. The problem now is that my uninstallation must have been screwy, because my computer is still insisting that BG1 is still an active program on the computer. This means I can not install it, nor can I uninstall it because the uninstalling file is gone. Get it? :p

Anyway, there is nothing in the Black Isle directory and nothing in regedit directory. When I go to my control panel or put the BG1 start disc in I get the options to uninstall, but they always fail because, guess what, the game is uninstalled.

Any help would be very appreciated. I have BGII and Morrowind memorized and don't think I can do either of those again for a while. ;)

Are you sure that there aren't remainder keys in the registry? (regedit)
Try and do a search for black isle, baldur, bg etc what you can think off and seeing if it is possible that which is the problem.
It is a very long time ago, so I wouldn't know what to look for, but you should also try to see if .dll files remain somewhere on your harddrive.
There is software which will test registry (regclean being one) and files for dependancy I belive, try and search around for that on the web to see if you can find some - if you can't find the BG keys/file manually

When you can't install a program because the operative system still thinks it is installed, it is 95% (disclaimer: this is a random number used to indicate a huge probability :D ) of the time due to files remaining.

Sorry I can't give you more excat help.

Nothing in the Black Isle directory? Does that mean the folder still exists? Delete it, it might be causing problems.

here ya go

from the Bioware forums:

1.43: [BG/TotSC] - How to manually uninstall Baldur's Gate: (Back to Top)

In order to completely remove the original Baldur's Gate from your machine follow these instructions:

You'll need to go into the utility called REGEDIT Click on start, then run and type REGEDIT and press ok Now, only remove EXACTLY what is stated below. If you remove the wrong information from your registry, your machine may not boot up. You should see an item called HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE Click the + beside that and look for the following (clicking the + each time):

SOFTWARE BioWare Corp. (make sure it's the one with the period)

In there, you should find a folder called Baldur's Gate Right Click on the baldur's gate folder and delete it. Then, under SOFTWARE, look for the following (clicking the + again):

Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion App Paths

In the App Paths, find BGMAIN.EXE and right click and delete it.

One last thing to find. It's in the CurrentVersion section. Find Uninstall and click on the + You should find Baldur's Gate (this is what lists it in the add/remove programs). Right click and delete Baldur's Gate (if you find it).
