Hi:
I finished playing BG2 SoA and ToB recently (SoA was a replay, ToB a first run) and I'm now playing through BG1 for the first time.
I'm playing as a Paladin, which is how I did my play of BG2. My final BG2 party had:
- Me
- Jaheira (romance)
- Minsc
- Mazzy
- Aerie
- Imoen
And although it was rather unbalanced, it worked and I enjoyed it. So now I'm playing BG1, and would like to have it end in a way that makes sense for my BG2 run. But that would mean a party of:
- Me
- Imoen (which is fine)
- Minsc (again fine)
- Dynaheir (haven't gotten her yet, but assume fine as I need a mage)
- Jaheria
- Khalid.
My problem is the last two. Jaheira is constantly moaning, and the voice work is pretty bland, and Khalid in particular seems to play no particular use - he's weak as a front liner, and provides no support.
I know my options are to (a) just dump them both (J & K) and forget continuity, (b) let Khalid die or (c) keep them both and seal my party early on.
One question - if I drop them somewhere, will they stay there? Do they disappear like some or just hang around like others? I could always pick them up later.
Any advice?
Does Jaheira get better? (playing backwards)
Jaheira is more annoying in BGI than she is in BGII. With only a 14 DEX, she's also a lot less useful, because her AC sucks, and she's not good in Melee or in Ranged combat.
I'm keeping her, as well as Minsc and Imoen (storyline purposes), and Dynaheir (she's not too bad, and has a good Lore for a non-Bard).
In my game I killed Khalid, and I'm rationalizing it in the way that it gives J more time to get over him, so she can go for my Ranger/Cleric!
Hehe.
Anyway, if I weren't concerned about the storyline at all, I would pick up Branwen or Yeslick instead of Jaheira.
Oh yeah, and if you drop someone, they usually stay right where you leave them. If you have an extra spot in your party, I'd suggest Coran and/or Garrick. They're really good NPCs IMHO.

Coran is a must have. Yeslick takes too long to get, and his level is poo, which is a real shame. Edwin is also a must, he is too good. I can't stand Garrick, and you've probably already passed him.
Kick J&K for Edwin and Coran. You can go 5man for a while. Edwin Coran and Dynheir are difficult to have in the same team, but its possible. Just check the forum before you do too much. (nashkel-ish)

I did kick J&K - someone justified it to me as since they're sent by the Harpers to watch you in BG2, and they did their service to Gorion by keeping an eye on you through the mines, that the debt is paid and you're free to let them go. It kind of ticked me off that while Khalid said 'have my doubts about leaving' ... Jaheira, who already had been moaning about ' not liking the direction ... perhaps better leadership is in order' then said 'you are much like Gorion, but without the wisdom'. You b&&ch!!! Remind me why I rescued her from the Harper's Hold and fell in love with her in BG2?!?!
I'll look for Coran ... but I've been past Edwin, and told him to go jump in a lake ... I'm playing a Paladin, and I have a 20+ rep already - and don't plan on it going down.
Thanks,
Mike

I ditched K and J for same reasons. I got 20 rep and got tired of Jaheria's whining. For me, they pop up at the Inn in Naskel quite frequently. I usually give them the finger before getting a room for the night. Good riddance!
I also ditched Branwen for same reasons, and as an FYI she shows up at the Inn on Beregost's west side (forget name). However, she refuses to rejoin my party every time. I'm admittedly hurting a little without Bran or Jaheira, they are the best healers in the game.
Oh well, I'll manage.

I can't say I've actually held on to any of the "stock" party for very long. I did try to run it once and I just couldn't handle it. My picks for a "good" party would be Branwen/Yeslick, Coran, Kivan, and Xan and "evil" would be Safana/Montaron, Viconia, Edwin, and Sharteel/Kagain. The rest fall under one of 3 categories: annoying to the point where I don't wanna associate with them and if I do they end up dead(Minsc), they are worthless in battle, or they appear too late in the game.

I can't stand Jaheira in BG1 either (to the point that I've never been able to bring myself to romance her in BG2, though in that game I can at least stomach keeping her in my party all the way through). Khalid isn't as annoying, but he's pretty useless.
I always take Minsc/Dynaheir and Imoen. In place of J&K I'll usually go with Kivan and Branwen until Yeslick becomes available, at which point I boot Branwen for him.

I normally got Jaheria killed off in BG1 and kept Khalid. He became one of my main fighters in BG1 and did quite well after a few levels and weapon profencies (he had most kills in one of my game as well
)
I dont think Jaheria is very usefull in BG1 - along with any other multiclassed - with the "low" exp. cap level. I rarely dualclassed anybody either, not even Imoen. I prefer pure classes.
