The World is all Black

Post by Haydon 5 »

I just recently replaced my hardrive, and now when I load up Arcanum everything is black. The Sierra logo movie, (I get the sound, but no picture), the Armoured Guy (or is it a Gal?) with the pistol can be heard but not seen (though the loading pictures of the skeletons, the train station, Sir Walter who ever's dim novel are visible. Then comes the wierdest stuff.

The Game menu works and is visible, and I can create characters, and do everything EXCEPT for adjust the brightness level (and yes I do have the patch). The major problem is the Airship movie has sound, but no video, and there is no world, though the menu frames around the side of the screen are visible.

What is going on can anyone help me? I had the problem previously, but every time I rebooted it was fixed, now nothing seems to work. I have played all the way to the eleven village and now I can not even see anything.

Black World

Did you use mirroring software to setup the new HDD or did you reinstall the software? The problem with mirror software is in can't copy protected files. So insert the install disk and when the window comes up select repair. After that if you still have a problem uninstall Arcanum and re-install it.

Your DirectX version should be 9.01b. Test the video using directdiag and let us know what you found. If you have the old HDD and its based on DOS then reinstall it and startup in DOS. In the root directory type ATTRIB *.* -h-p-s and press enter. (You may need to enter the attrib suffexes one at a time e.g. attrib -h; attrib -p.) The attrib commnad changes the permissions of the files. Caution it will also reset the permissions of your email and internet security files. If you were using the NT configuration then nothing can be done.

Now you can remirror the HDD. But repair or reinstall is easier.
