WinXP SP2

Post by vaugula »

Hi everyone, I have just recently got a new computer that had SP2 preinstalled on it and after I installed Torment on it, it seems to crash when I move into some areas. Is anyone else suffering from this problem or is it just me? Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?

I doubt that Service Pack 2 specifically is causing the problem. Some programs have issues with SP2 only because the internet features they use do not cooperate with updated internet security implemented by Microsoft in the new release.

It probably has something to do with another part of your PC. You should do the Full Install as shown here.

If the problem persists, post your system specifications.

EDIT: Of course, there is still a probability that Service Pack 2 breaks Planescape: Torment and possible other Black Isle games. I'm having issues with my PC right now, so can anyone share any experiences with these games and SP2?

Ah cheers for that link, I will certainly give that a try. In the little FAQ the question about the game crashing when loading a new area describes my symptoms pretty well. I have also had a theory for a while that my discs were slightly damaged so I have been trying to get some new ones (doesn't everyone want two copies of this game? :P ).

Anyway if the full install or my new discs fixes the problem I will let you all know.

One other thing you might want to think about in getting new CDs is burning them so you don't wear out your new discs. I haven't tried it yet with Planescape but since BG1 worked great with burned CDs-not just running the game but they work great for the install as well-and since Torment was released at around the same time as BG1 it should have the same security against burning (eg NONE) as BG1.

Bear in mind that the 2CD release, if that's what you get and being considerably more recent than the original, may have increased security against burning, but since writable CDs are cheap the worst you'll do is make a few 30-50 cent coasters.

If you want to replace your game your best bet is eBay since it's OOP. Just be aware that the price is spiking. A couple of months ago it was 10-20 used, considerably more NIB, but now it's 30-45 used, and as much as 70 (even 70+) NIB.

Of course if you don't mind waiting, you can always get a copy of Plane Scape (as opposed to Planescape) for 15 or so, since you're bidding on a typo auction. The number of those auctions is shrinking, so eBay might be alerting sellers to the correct spelling.

Cheers for the advice, I have acquired a used copy (4 CD version) from ebay and the first thing I am going to do when it arrives (should be today or tomorrow) is make some back ups so I don't kill this ones too.

By the way, I just tested the game and it works flawlessly with Service Pack 2. No problems whatsoever.

Wise move. It's definitely replayable, a different game if you emphasize different stats and profession. But even twice through with a mage, it's still the most literate, thoughtful CRPG ever developed.

Ah great, thanks for the confirmation. I was starting to suspect as much but I was still concerned by not *knowing* :)

Fixed!

*cackles with glee*
I got my new discs today and they work great. Thank you everyone for your help.

Although I was initially upset that the game stopped working I am actually really glad that it did as it helped me find this forum and see that there are other people who are still interested in this game after all this time. Perhaps most importantly it also led to me finding out that there is an active effort to improve the game through the Torment fix pack, I bow down in worship of the highly talented people responsible for that effort :)
