Questions about Monk and D&D rules

Post by JustCurious »

Hey again. Anyways, instead of the aforementioned archer I ended up going with a monk. He's lvl 9 now but I'm a bit confused by his attributes. In the description it says his fists do 1-12 damage at level 9 and that they become +1 weapons. What does the +1 part mean? Also I just found this short sword of quickness and when I equip it I notice my # of attacks goes from 5/2 up to 7/2. my THACO goes down...does this mean i should use the short sword? Eventually my fists do 1-20 damage...is that good? Doesn't a short sword do 1-10dmg(according to manual)?

Last question, when a spell says it does 8D5 damage or something what does that mean? I mean a 2 handed sword with 1D10 means it is one die with 10 sides...8D5 means 8 dice are thrown?

ps- why with my monks barehands can he never do a 40dmg critical hit like Minsc does? I'm confused.

A) The +1 means they can hit creatures that need magic weapons to hit, it also confers +1 to hit and +1 damage.

B) I never tried the Kundane with my monk , but it might be better to use till you gain extra attacks with your fists (few more levels).

C) Yes 1-20 is good , in fact it is the most damage in the game by far (next best is 1-12).

D) 8D5 would imply that 8 dice of five sides each are rolled (never seen a 5 sided dice).

Monks really kick ass, but not till they get up a few lvls , as a consequence to there later power they are weak in the lower levels. Stick with him i promice you will love him later.

Hey thanks. I'm actually playing and checking back here every so often. I just finished another quest. I really wanted to keep my party around 4 ppl...but I *had* to keep Yoshimiro around to detect traps and such...and now I have Haers D' (the Blade :P ) because I had to see what he could do. Seems kinda weak though. Do less enemies pop out when your party is smaller or are the # of enemies unrelated to party size? I'm considering dropping this Bard and Yosh the thief...what are my chances with Me(The Monk), Minsc, Jaheira(I actually like her least of all...can I leave her behind?), and Aerie? If I can leave Jaheira behind I will keep the Bard instead of her. Then just use Aerie for trap detecting...or is the thief absolutely necessary? Thanks again all.

whoa....

monks can detect traps, but not disarm them...you need someone who can disarm traps unless you decide to use solo tactics.

Did some experiments using monk, obscene magic resist, if you sk in use any item, you can use holy avenger, reach around 130 magic resist.

great defensive class, if you use the pc to face spell casting enemies, or decide to go after beholders without bounce items.

still like the kensai, with +5 weapon reached around thaco -22...

monk is better defense, but the kensai rules as pure killer...

holy might, kai, greater whirlwind with auto pause per round, all will be active for 1 round!!!!

holy lasts about 6 rounds, kai around 3 and whirlwind one, of course....

80 damage per hit!!! with obscene thaco, can hit iron golems with wooden quarterstafffs, no magic, but will not affect golem...

you dont even need powerful magic weapons, do all three in sequence, and you can get around 80 damg withstaff of rynn!!!
They call me Darth...

Darth Gizka!

Muwahahahahhahahha!!!
