NWN or Icewind Dale 2

Post by Janarehansen »

Having more or less shelfed NWN (my machine doesnt cut it), I wonder if my computer could run Icewind Dale 2?

My specs:
- Compac, Pentium 3 (450 mhz)
- 320 mb ram
- S3 Savage4 Pro card
- 10 gigs of free disc

Ill probably pick up NWN later this summer when I buy a new computer, but I need something to play until then :-)

....also: NWN didnt get the rave reviews everybody expected it would get. Why is that? Thought this was a game right up every Baldurs Gate lovers alley.

any good?

Is the game any good? Liked Icewind Dale 1 very much. Is the transition to 3rd edition rules hard? Im a hardcore 1st edition rules roleplayer myself (seriously old school) :-)

Icewind Dale 2 uses the infinity engine just like Baldurs Gate II and the original Icewind Dale. The difference is that IWDII uses 3rd edition D&D rules (like NWNs). Icewind Dale 2 has a decent story - but it is more of a dungeon crawl than BGII. The NPC interactions and depth of story of BGII are not present in IWDII.
I would recommend IWD II - 3rd edition rules are pretty cool - just don't expect to love it as much as BGII. If you liked IWD you will probably like IWDII - just need to learn 3rd edition rules (which have been out for a few years now and seems to be the basis for all new D&D games - so it may be a good time to learn the system)

Regarding NWNs - it was designed for multi-player - the game is meant to be played with other players in a DM controlled atmosphere - like P&P D&D. The official single player campaign is not that good IMHO - it is more of a tutorial for learning the game. The other strength to NWNs are the thousands of custom modules that are constantly being developed.

In conclusion - BGII and IWD II are great single player RPGs - BGII is the cream of the crop - IWDII is worth playing if you have the right expectations. NWNs is a great multiplayer game with unlimited expansion through user designed modules. I would recommend that you check out the IWDII forum and in particular the sticky thread entitled "Kaylesses multiclassing Guide" if you want more information about the game. :)
