Scather

Post by Arachnol »

Hey

Just a quick question: I read both walkthrough and equipement description, and noticed one discrepancy. Equipement section implies Scather is a bastard sword, while the walkthrough says it is a greatsword.

Any insight about it?

Thanks

Scather is a bastard sword - but here's the weird part: even though the bastard sword is considered an exotic weapon, my fighters do not get the "you are not proficient with this weapon" message when they equip it. Note that this is also true of (if nothing else) the masterwork bastard swords that Brother Smyth makes, too. It may be a trivial game bug of some sort.

I just freed Thrommel, then wandered around for weeks until his emissaries tracked us down and gave us the sword. The description reads bastard sword - both identified and unidentified. I noted that my fighters were able to equip it as if proficient. I then went to Smyth and bought a masterwork bastard sword and saw that they were able to equip it without penalties as well.

I don't know how the game will read the sword in terms of weapon focus/specialization/etc. choices, nor do I know if there are "invisible" penalties that will apply (e.g., the game allows it to be quipped, but still recognizes it as a bastard sword in combat and applies non-proficiency penalties).

But, after my long-winded dissertation...

...Scather is a bastard sword.

Thanks!

Thanks Greywolf for the info!!

Anyhow, if somebody else can answer the implicit question of focus/specialization, I would be very grateful.

Re: Scather/Fragarach

Greywulf is right about this, both weapons are bastard swords and you need to take focus & spez. in B.Sword to get extra dmg.

However, your fighters and any other PC with martial weapon prof.: ALL are also able to wield theese swords TWO-HANDED !

This is how it is in the PnP d&d game, Exotic Wpn Prof is needed to wield Bastard swords ONE-HANDED only and the guys at CO8 had this in their patch and i think Atari's patch also allows for this.

You will need to specialize in B.sword to gain improve Critical for theese wpns, else don't bother since they never miss for chaotic good aligned Pc's (also CN,NG pc'c)

Mull, man - that is so cool - great info!

I always wondered about the deal with one and two-handed use of the bastard sword.

It all makes sense now.

Youre welcome :)

I noticed lot of confusion about theese swords, with angry players choosing wrong feats etc, and the ATARI forum didnt have the answers either.

I guess that beeing a dedicated roleplayer in PnP games sometimes pay off.

For me it makes sense that we unravel the secrets here at GB
(due to email incompability, i cant post there, whaz up with that?)

One more thing, LAWFUL & EVIL Pc's take damage when picking up theese blades, one more reason to include ELMO since he's faithful and Chaotic Good, if any of you play with Law or Evil-aligned groups.

Happy hunting :) :) :)

I'm not running with the Co8 patch, but I do have the newest regular patch installed. I just got Scather last night, and it seems to be a Greatsword, even though the text seems to imply it should be a Bastard Sword.

I gave Scather to my character with Bastard Sword proficiency who was equipped with a +3 Bastard Sword (enchanted by party wizard) and a +3 Shield. When I try to equip them with Scather, it won't let me. I need to unequip the shield first. So it's certainly not a bastard sword that can be wielded one-handed. Also, the damage reads 2d6 which is normal for a Greatsword.

I wound up giving the sword to the other fighter who is proficient with Greatsword. They had been using the Frost Brand found in the fire temple which I'd since enchanted to make it Holy. I'll see if Scather is better that the Holy Frost Brand or not.
