I have just started SoA for the 15th time on lan with my brother, i have got a blade and he has an archer. I am thinking of dualing my blade to a thief so that he gets backstabbing. Shall I do this or shall I have my blade as it is now?
What is the max lvl of bard spells?

Bard spells go up to 6th level.
My skald is currently level 15 and he still only has access to 5th level spells, so its a while before you get 6th level.
I wouldnt recommend dualing a bard to a skald, youd be better off with a mage/thief or thief-->mage combination if you are wanting magic and backstabbing.
Cleric/thief (chaotic neutral or evil, follower of cyric) isnt such a silly combo either.
if you want a more interesting thief than your average thief, the assassin and swashbuckler are cool kits too.

you can't dualclass bards (and bard kits) in BG2. even if you do some modding (add abilities via Shadowkeeper, etc.) you won't be able to use the abilities, as the GUI will determine what you can use: no bard song button = no bard song... there are some exceptions to this (detect traps and stealth work with no GUI buttons to represent them if they are part of a script the char is using). Also, backstab multiplyers can be added to any char, usng the Shadowkeeper.

apart from the fact that you can't dual a bard, I don't see any usefulness of dualing a 15th lev. blade to a thief: what you would eventually get? a thief with the ability to cast up to 5th lev. spells, no bard song (at 15th lev. blade's song sucks).
If you want that kind of char. take an elf f/m/t, you can you will start ToB able to cast 5th or 6th lev spells (an higher in future), you have your thief with all the abilities (incl. backstabbing), and being a fighter you'll have even a decent Thac0 (not including the benefit of weapon spec. and the 19 in dex you can get).
