HOU Question - Slave Pens in Illithid City

HOU Question - Slave Pens in Illithid City

According to the Gamebanshee walkthrough you can free the slaves by talking to their leader. Problem is when I kill the warden and use his key to unlock the cells the gladiators/slaves are all hostile and attack me. Do I have to do something else for them to be neutral/friendly ??
