Scandisk in WinXP?

Post by humanflyz »

Is there a Scandisk tool in WindowsXP like there is in Windows 98. So far, the only thing I found close is chkdsk.exe, and that's a command prompt program only. It says that it detects some errors on my drive but doesn't fix the errors. Is there a program in WindowsXP that servers a similar function to Scandisk? Or do I have to get a 3rd party program?

On a side note, I seem to be missing my Run option in my Start Menu. Is there a way to get it back? I am using WindowsXP Professional with SP1.

There is an equivalent of Sandisk in XP. Double click on 'My Computer', r-click on your hard drive and select 'properties'. Go to the 'Tools' tab and click 'Check Now' on the error checking option. Make sure ti tick the 'Repair Errors' option and start the scan. You should get a message that this operation required a reboot. This is to make sure no other programs interefere with the scan. The disk check will run on the next reboot.

To get the 'Run' option back, right click on the start button and select 'Properties'. Click on 'Customize' and go to the advanced tab. The 'Run' command should be near the bottom of the start menu items list.
