I've never used counter spells myself, but as far as I've been able to read of it, recognising what spell the opponent is casting is a big part of it. Wich means the spellcraft skill (it is the skill you use to identify a spell being cast).

You can't counter an "unknown" spell, but if you can read that he is casting slow for instance, you can counter that with the prober spells.
How it works presicely in the game, I can't say (yet) because I've not tested it.

I'll try to find something more out.

"Spellcraft is used to identify spells and to perform counterspells"

That´s the words...

Logically it means that one can use Spellcraft to Counter a spell...

But reality is rarley logical....

That means that you use spell craft to identify a spell so you can perform/cast a counterspell.

You must identify a spell before you know wich to counter. = Spellcraft ("A successful Spellcraft check is requiered before your character can attempt to counterspell")

You need to cast a real spell to cast a counterspell.
There is some more information on counterspelling on page 109 in the manual (well, 109 in my manual)
