Yes there is, by design BG2 strips you of all your items expect for a select few if you have them.

Anyway I've read that if you manage to time if right and pause the game just before Irenicus talks to you in your cage at the beginning you will still have the items from BG1 in your inventory and you can then drop them onto the ground, after his dialog it'll be too late.

Good luck

You will find that very, very few of the items that you want to import from BG1 will compare to the items that you will find relatively quickly in BG2...It's not worth the effort to try and cheat...play the game as it was meant to be played...

umm, actually there is quite a difference if you start with a lousy splintmail or with a platemail +3 and all the other goodies and have two helms of balduran a cloak of balduran a ring of prot +2 drizzt's swords boots of speed gauntlets of dex gauntlets of ogre power just to mention few... yes there are better ones in the game but to start with those is better than with the cr*p you can find in irenicus' dungeon...

if you want to keep them import and when the screen is black before your character screams pause go into inventory and put them on the floor. unpause , watch and when irenicus leaves pick all the items up

There is one item that is always left in the import though.... the golden pantalons. I seems to remember something else that also get's imported automatically but I can't remeber what......you can find these items behind the painting in the "inventory" room just next to the cage you are kept in....

I agree that starting with powerful items from BG1 is "better" in some respects. Namely, they make your characters more powerful and make the first two chapters of the game much easier. If that's what you prefer, go for it.

But I actually prefer the alternative--starting out with very little in the way of gold and equipment. It makes the game more challenging and thus more fun. Going through Irenicus's dungeon is pointless unless you don't have any equipment to start with. Being stripped bare and having to reconstitute my inventory sets the tone for the first chapter and elicits emotions that add to the game. I want to recover what I've lost and get back at the people who captured me. Earning my first set of field plate (by defeating Mencar Pebblecrusher and his gang in the first chapter) means a lot to me. If I already had +3 platemail, it wouldn't be the same. So I think you could argue that it's "better" not to import a bunch of powerful items from BG1. But of course, anyone can cheat if he wants to, and it doesn't bother me if people do. It's an individual choice. :)
