How to play a monk?

Post by Rudar Dimble »

I play a monk and have reached lvl 7 or so (it's been a while since I have played). When I attack, I just let him kick the opponents ass off, but I do not use his special abbilities.

Am I doing something wrong, or are those abbilities worthless till I reach lvl 12?

Sorry, Rudar, I'd offer my advice except I've never played a monk in any of bioware's RPGs before, let alone NWN.

This forum is a bit slow nowadays, so just hang in there for a little while, I'm sure someone more knowledgable will come alone and answer your question.

It really is all dependant on the style of game you play - and how you want to play it. The large majority of Monk special abilities from the list are automatic use - Diamond Soul, or Diamond Body being examples.

Wholeness of Body and Flurry of Blows are the two 'selected weapons' have at level 7. The only two other abilties you can 'use', as such, are Empty Body (concealment 2 x per day @ Level 18) and Quivering Palm (a death strike @ level 15).

Now, lets remember the purpose of the Monk - the aggressive use of his limbs to fight. So Rudar, you're doing nothing 'wrong', you can't exactly select much apart from Improved Knockdown at level 6 (free feat).

Oh, Improved Knockdown can be very useful if you're surrounded, never discount it, and make use of it, along with Flurry of Blows, you can get yourself out of a real pickle.

What to do?

Also, consider taking a lvl of fighter for weapon specialization:unarmed strike if you took weapon focus already. In NWN you can multiclass freely and need only be a ftr with +4 BAB. :D

It does tend to make things too easy for several chapters...
