stale mary + silent king

Post by Robnark »

what stat requirements are to be met before you can persuade stale mary to let you get to see the silent king. i've never manage to do it in any of my previous games, but i'm going for completism this time, but i still can't persuade her. the only dialogue relating to the silent king simply makes her repeat 'silent king' over and over again.

First of all, did you already complete all of Hagrimm's quests? If so, you won't be able to get the dialogue option with Stale Mary that allows you to see the Silent King.

You need to have Charisma of 16 or higher for Stale Mary to help you like that (she will also do other nice things for you). You also need to be able to communicate with her and ask her the right questions. To do that, you need to acquire the skill called "Stories Bones Tell". Stale Mary can teach you that skill if your Intelligence is 16 or higher, or if Hargrimm gave you a clue that there's a way to talk to her; his exact words are, "Thou must *learn* to listen, that is all." Once she teaches you that skill, you can ask her if there's a way to meet the Silent King.

I'm not sure if that's true, but there is one thing I noticed. Before you can ask Stale Mary how you could meet with the Silent King, you must ask Hargrimm, "Why have I been made a prisoner?" Hargrimm will reply, "'Tis the will of the Silent King." Then you must ask, "Could he be convinced to allow otherwise?" This will create the following entry in your journal: "Hargrimm told me that there was a chance the Silent King could be persuaded to release me. If I could only meet with him, somehow..." When that condition is met, you can ask Stale Mary if she knows a way to reach the Silent King, as long as you have the skill called "Stories Bones Tell". If your CHA is 16 or higher, she would be glad to show you.

It is. Once you are no longer their prisoner you have no reason to see the Silent King.

i'm way past the dead nations - i'm just about to go to carceri - so i've done all hagrimm's quests. i'm not sure what my CHA is exactly, but i think it is 16, in which case, does it have to be a 'natural' 16, or does a modified CHA count?

Then you can't see the Silent King, no matter your CHR. For future reference, yes 'modified' CHR counts.

I already explained it above. The reason Nameless wanted to see the Silent King was so that he could ask him if he could leave. If you're already free, you no longer have that need.
You can still kill Hargrimm and take his key from his body, and go see the Silent King but you will not see the cutscene/scene of events that would happen normally.

oh, right, the thing is, i thought you could do the silent king thing later by getting many-as-one to give you the quest to find out about him, then asking stale mary to let you see him somehow. ah well...

Well then you'd have to kill Hargrimm for the key. You can also steal it off of him, but seeing the King by this method will still make everyone hostile (red) when it's all over.

Platter is correct. The only reason that Stale Mary will tell you how to meet the Silent King is if you tell her that it's not right for you to be imprisoned just for stumbling into the Dead Nations. If you complete Hargrimm's quests and ask him to speak to the Silent King about permitting you to leave, Hargrimm will say, "The Silent King has spoken. Thou are free to go. Thy way shall no longer be barred." When that happens, the following entry will appear in your journal: "Hargrimm spoke to the Silent King on my behalf, and I have been released from my imprisonment within the Dead Nations." At that point, you can no longer ask Stale Mary if she knows a way to see the Silent King.

Obviously, since you have already left the Dead Nations, you're no longer a prisoner, and the dialogue option is gone.

Once you leave the Dead Nations, I don't think you can use the portal even if Stale Mary has told you how to open it. If you accept the quest from Many-As-One to find (or kill) the Silent King after you have already left the Dead Nations, I guess you have to fight your way in.
