Familar questions
Been awhile since I did anything D & D, but I have never used a familar before. How long do they last after casting? Are they worth having? The lose one constitution point kinda scares me.
"Blind. Like one when sleep comes over in a swoon; I stumbled in the darkness, and went down"
Familiars are the equivalent of a mages wizard eye with some mildly useful abilities of their own. They are permanent after summoning though and are quite speedy and able to evade most enemies if micromanaged.
I once threw a whole slew of priestly and wizardly boosting spells on the rabbit familiar and set it up against four trolls. It kicked their butts with frightening ease.
But since boosting spells are for the most part better used on the party fighters instead of bunnies that leaves the familiar much to be wished for. Simply summon one and get the hp boost for your mage and then stick in your backpack for the rest of the game.
Or better yet, summon one and get the hp boost, then use the shadowkeeper utility to create an NPC in your party that takes the place of the familiar.
I made a pseudodragon kensai/mage/thief with the soundset of Morte from Planescape:Torment. Anything to keep from getting bored with the game
.
Wished they had added the wizardspells for improving the familiar over time. Or the Empowered Familiar spell. But alas one can wish for everything between heaven and earth I guess. It's just that the game is so darn good that it's close to perfect.

Do you get a better familiar the longer you wait to summon it =the higher level you have? And if you do, is it worth waiting to summon one till you get a high level (im playing a mage as pc) ? Also, what decides what kind of familiar you get? Only luck or what?
You know, like... a very long time ago, I was like a ... Moonblade. Hehehe.
