Druids

Post by wampas30 »

I've been wanting to make a druid class character, but I'm not sure which is the best one. Any suggestions. I'm most interested in the one that can change into an iron golem.. which kit is he? Thanks

I wouldn't mind playing tha druid either, however there is no such kit in bg2. If you waant to change into an Iron golem you need the 9 level spell shapechange (or limited wish).
The shapeshifter can change into a greater werewolf which is pretty strong but still weaker than a fighter. The avenger has numerous shapeshifts like spider and salamander etc.
I believe the best is the totemic druid cause those spirit animals are awesome.

I've never heard of such a shapechange for a druid either, but I'd certainly be interested. :D

Totemic Druids are by far the best kit, power wise. They have virtually no disadvantages, since the druid shapechange does no good at high levels, and the spirit animals are indeed awesome.

The others can be interesting, depending on your playing style. I am extremely curious how druids will be in ToB. :)

I believe that Druids in TOB will be much stronger than they are currently, according to rumors flying around on the Bioware boards.

IMHO, only at the start. They do not grow with levels. However it helps in the beginning, and druid can become pretty strong at high levels. Though, in difference with AD&D, there are no spells above level 7 and many D&D druids' cool features aren't even mentioned.

If you want to play a druid, choose the totemic kit IMO. Druid cannot shapechange into iron golem......that's the limited wish spell... ;)

... or Shapechange. Level 9, of wizard, but you can use a scroll if you're a mage, sorcerer or bard. There are some later in the game.

Of the three, the Totemic Druid is probably the best. At level 11 solo, fresh out of Irenicus' dungeon I was able to wipe out the party in the 7 Vales with little difficulty. Actually though, all druids are relatively powerful at the beginning, then trail off as they hit their level limit.

Totemic druids suck, there animals' weapons are considered non-magical, after Chapter 2 they become useless...

Spirit Animals are at least +1. I'm not sure if the Avenger Sword Spider is even that good and the other Avenger forms are wimpy with the exception of special purpose uses (ex Salamander vs the Guardians in Firkragg's). I think the Greater Werewolf is +2 though.

Still, the biggest advantage is that the Totemic Druid can use the animals WHILE casting spells. I would love to see an item that enabled an Avenger or Shapeshifter to cast while shifted.

Off the topic, but still on druids, just killed Firkragg with my Avenger/Fighter (imported from BG1 to avoid the Str/Con penalties). 2 Fire Elementals and Bottle Efreeti for Support, Stone Skin, 5xArmor of Faith, Protection from Fire, Sword Spider with 6 attacks (fighter bonus and boots), 25 Dex (potions of Mind Focussing), 24 Str (Potion of Storm Giant)...

The fight took less time than the preparation :D
