Post by Bloodstalker »

Anyone else having this problem?

I go to reply to a post, and I got about a 50/50 shot ot the message actually going through. the rest of the time, I get that annoying can't locate server error or it just hangs up....either way, I lose my reply. No big deal for me, but if HLD loses one of his replies and has to retype, he'ss gonna develop arthritis of the fingers.

I'ts gotten so bad, I copy everything I type before I hit reply just in case

So far, I only get it at this and one other message board....they both use the same identical format is what makes me curious. It's been a problem over there for a long time.

Is it possible...

...that your problem is your pc?

Anyway, maybe our comp experts like Eerhardt and Mr. Flibbs can give their suggestions and opinions. :)

Luckily(?) for you all, I've only lost half a dozen or so posts to server errors or application time-outs in the past few months so you can read all of my posts in their full glory. However, since I started my new job, I haven't had much chance to post here as often as I am used to, so my posts per day is dropping.

Are you at work or at home when you're losing posts? I lose more posts at work where there is sometimes a lot of network traffic, so you may be losing some posts that way. You might also PM this to Buck and see if he has done any updates to the boards (or maybe see if the boards are due for an update/cleaning).

@HLD....I have the problems from home. So the traffic shouldn't be an issue. I wonder about my connection though.....I don't think my phone lines are as clean as they should be. I have been under the suspicion that my phone lines are what is causeing me to lose connection at times. I just didn't want to bother Buck with this if no one else was having the same problems. Still, that other board makes me wonder. It has the exact same format, and they have a tone of images/smileys linked in their sigs. It takes some pages awhile to load as a result.

It's that damn kentucky internet. Blame your cousin. :D

still, that's a drag. are you dealing with dial up or are having this problem with a higher bandwidth connection.

It could be an ISP issue.

Perhaps Buck is subtly trying to tell you, 'you post too much'.

You might consider contacting your ISP and seeing if they have some sort of filter they can put on your modem and/or phone line that would reduce noise that may be messing with your outgoing packets. If you have an extra phone cord lying around, swap out your existing phone cable with one that's new.

If you know you're going to be using dial-up for a while (at least into the near future), you might also consider getting a v.92 modem that has a higher upload speed than a v.90, k-flex or X2 modem and will let you use caller ID and call waiting/interrupt.

Thank goodness someone out there is in the know concerning dial up accounts. HLD, you're a credit to GB.

I'm with Ned on giving credit to HLD Image. Unfortunately, my own knowledge on connection issues is limited (to say the least) :o , but I just wanted to let BS know that he's not the only one with that problem ;) . I have on occasion lost posts that way as well, just not as often as seems to be the case with BS's computer. Of course, whèn it happened, it was usually one of the longer posts...

Another superb answer from HLD Image. And I agree with the diagnosis. I had a couple of problems posting from home when I was still on dial-up, but everything has been fine since stepping up to broadband.

I have also seen a few other instances where the phone cable has been twisted or damaged in some way causing connection and speed problems with dial-up modems.

I find that it logs me out automatically every so often (even on my broadband connection), so that I will post a reply, then have to log in, and then it will tell me that no thread has been specified...

This is alright because one can use the back button to get one's post back, but if this happens while one's writing a PM, then it is lost forever... :(

I have switched the phone cord before I posted this, so if there is a problem, it's in the outside line. I doubt I'll bother with it anyway if it is, If I am still on dial-up by Dec., I am just going to shoot myself.

@Ned....which cousin? We're all related...wait, they hired a feriner from the next county last month....that's got to be it :D

@BS Well going back to your original post, that happens to me a lot at the college because the connection sometimes is quite lacking, so I copy every post and post it. At home, 90% of the time or so, the post goes through. But just to let you know, youre not alone, friend. :D

Which cousin, d'oh! Sorry BS. I meant that horse faced kid with the funny walk and the drool problem. I guess that doesn't narrow it down much either. I think his name was billy ray or bobby jo; something along those lines.

Hell, I give up. Get a DSL!
